About the Show
This animated series is based on the famous Peter Pan play and book by James Matthew Barrie. It has 41 episodes filled with adventure. The show was supposed to start on January 8, 1989, but it was delayed by a week because of the death of Emperor Shōwa.
Peter Pan: The Animated Series was part of the World Masterpiece Theater, a special collection of anime shows by Nippon Animation. Each year, this series would bring a different classic book or story to life as an animated show. While this anime uses parts of the original Peter Pan story, it also adds many new adventures and characters.
Unlike most shows in the World Masterpiece Theater, which often take place in the real world and can be a bit sad, Peter Pan: The Animated Series is set in a fantasy world. Even though it has battles and adventures, it has a very bright and fun feeling. The story also adds a completely new part that focuses on a new character called Princess Luna. This series is also special because it includes Rascal from another anime, Rascal the Raccoon, making it the only World Masterpiece Theater show with a crossover!
In 1990, Saban Entertainment translated and released the series to many countries around the world. It was sometimes called Peter Pan: The Animated Series. You might have seen it on channels like Telecinco (Spain), SIC (Portugal), RTL Television (Germany), KiKA (Germany), Italia 1, Canale 5 and Rete 4 (Italy), TV3 (Sweden) and Fox Kids (Sweden, Norway), REN TV (Russia), Yleisradio (Finland), TVP 2 (Poland), TV2 (New Zealand), IETV and Fox Kids (Israel), Rede Globo (Brazil), XHGC (Mexico), ABS-CBN (Philippines), and Sky One's Fun Factory (United Kingdom).
Story of the Show
The anime begins with Wendy having a dream about Peter Pan saving her and fighting Captain Hook. Soon after, Wendy and her two brothers fly to Neverland. There, Wendy becomes like a "mother" to the Lost Boys. As the series goes on, Peter and Wendy become very close, and they have many exciting fights with the pirates.
The second half of the series tells a completely new story. It introduces two important new characters: Sinistra and Luna. This part of the story is different from the original book. Also, in this show, Peter Pan wears brown clothes every day, which is different from the green outfit he wears in many other versions, like the ones from Disney.
Main Characters
Peter Pan's Friends
- Peter Pan (ピーター・パン, Pītā Pan): He's the main hero of the show. Peter can be a bit quick-tempered, but he truly cares about his friends. He strongly believes in freedom and fights to keep Neverland a free and happy place for everyone.
- Wendy Moira Angela Darling (ウェンディ・モイラー・アンジェラ・ダーリング, Wendi Moirā Anjera Dāringu): Wendy is the oldest of three siblings who flies to Neverland with Peter Pan. She is brave, kind, smart, and cheerful. She's great at helping her family and friends stand up against Captain Hook.
- John Julian Darling (ジョン・ジュリアン・ダーリング, Jon Jurian Dāringu): Wendy's younger brother. He often gets into funny situations and trouble.
- Michael Darling (マイケル・ダーリング, Maikeru Dāringu): Wendy's youngest brother. Even though he's very young, he shows a lot of courage.
Residents of Neverland
- Tinker Bell (ティンカー・ベル, Tinkā Beru): A tiny fairy and one of Peter's closest friends. She's often called "Tink."
- Curly (カーリー, Kārī): One of the Lost Boys. He's small and wears a pot on his head. He often falls out of bed while sleeping!
- Slightly (スライトリー, Suraitorī): Another Lost Boy. He's quite clever and likes to invent things. He wears a big white coat and a cap with rabbit ears.

- Tiger Lily (タイガーリリー, Taigā Rirī): A brave Indian princess. She's a tomboy, and John starts to like her.
- Crocodile Watch (時計ワニ, Tokei Wani): This crocodile ate Captain Hook's hand a long time ago. Now, it always tries to eat the rest of him! It also swallowed a clock, which is why you can always hear a ticking sound when it's near.
- Rascal (ラスカル, Rasukaru): A friendly raccoon who often visits Peter Pan's house.
- Mermaids (人魚達, Ningyo-tachi): They are friends with Peter Pan and live in the waters of Neverland.
Captain Hook's Crew

- Smee (スミー, Sumī): An older pirate who works for Captain Hook. He's too kind to be a real pirate and is Hook's main helper.
- Bill (ビル, Biru): A strong pirate in Hook's crew.
- Cecco (チェッコ, Chekko): He leads the pirates when Hook isn't around. He keeps many knives hidden in his hat.
- Alf Menson (アルフ・メンソン, Arufu Menson): Another one of Captain Hook's pirates. He wears an eyepatch, suggesting he lost an eye.
- Starky (スターキー, Sutākī): A pirate who is often scared.
- Robert (ロバート, Robāto): The pirate in charge of Hook's artillery (cannons).
Sinistra's Side

She's a witch who wants to take away all freedom from Neverland and sees both Peter Pan and Captain Hook as her enemies. She has three helpers.
- Luna (ルナ, Runa): A powerful Princess of Light. She has a hidden dark and powerful side.

The show has two main songs:
- Opening theme: Peter Pan Again (もう一度ピーターパン, Mōichido Pīta Pan)

How the Show Was Made
Before the series aired, magazines showed early designs and pictures of Peter Pan to promote the show. Some of the character designs were a bit different from how they looked in the final series. The early story ideas also included Peter Pan and his friends stealing a treasure map from pirates and going on a journey to find it.
Differences from the Books and Other Shows
This animated series has some interesting differences compared to the original Peter Pan book and other movies or shows:
- In most other versions, Peter Pan always carries a dagger. But in The Adventures of Peter Pan, he uses a large scarf tooth for his fights.
- In the book and many other versions (like Walt Disney's Peter Pan or Peter Pan (2003)), the Darling children go to Neverland in their pajamas. In this show, they start in pajamas but change into their regular clothes before leaving for Neverland.
- The book and most other versions say there's only one clock in Neverland – inside the crocodile. But in episode 8 of this series, Captain Hook also has a clock on his ship.
- In the book and movies like Peter Pan (2003), Captain Hook is eaten by the crocodile at the end. But in this anime, he doesn't die.
- In the book and other versions, Peter and the Lost Boys live in an underground house. Here, they first live in a tree house above ground, and later it becomes a moving house on wheels.
- In the book, the Lost Boys and John Darling share a big bed, and Michael has his own basket bed. In The Adventures of Peter Pan, everyone has their own bed.
- In the book, Peter and the boys build a separate house just for Wendy. In this version, Wendy lives in the same house as Peter and the others.
- The book and most other versions show six Lost Boys. But in this series, there are only three.
- At the end of the book, the Lost Boys leave Neverland, are adopted by the Darling family, and grow up. But in this anime, they stay in Neverland and remain children even after Peter visits Wendy when she's an adult.
- In the book, Tinker Bell is already dead when Peter visits the grown-up Wendy. However, in The Adventures of Peter Pan (and Disney's Return to Neverland), Tink is still alive and comes with Peter to the Darling house when Wendy is an adult.
- In the original Japanese version, the crocodile's gender isn't mentioned. But in the English translation of this series, the crocodile is called "he." In Barrie's original book, the crocodile is described as female.
