Pine Log Mountain is a cool place in Georgia. It stands tall at about 2,338 feet (713 meters) above sea level. This mountain is just west of a town called Waleska. Most of Pine Log Mountain is in Cherokee County. However, parts of its mountain range stretch into Bartow County. Other peaks like Little Pine Log Mountain and Bear Mountain are also part of this range. Pine Log Mountain and its neighbors are the last mountains over 2,000 feet in the Appalachians in north Georgia. You won't find mountains this high again in the Appalachians until you go far southwest into Alabama.

Fun Things to Do at Pine Log Mountain

Most of the Pine Log Mountain area is a special wildlife management area. This means the land is managed to protect animals and their homes. Even though the very top of the mountain is not in this area, the rest of the range is. The top of Pine Log Mountain has a radio tower.

A company that makes paper owns this land. They let the state of Georgia use it to manage the wildlife. This is great because it means lots of different activities are allowed! You can go mountain biking, birdwatching, fishing, hiking, and hunting here. There are also many hiking trails on nearby peaks. These trails offer amazing views of the Pine Log Ridge. Some people think that Pine Log Mountain might have been mined for iron a long time ago. This is similar to Red Top Mountain State Park to the south.

Why Pine Log Mountain is Important

Pine Log Mountain is close to the big city of Atlanta. The city has grown a lot, so this wild area is a safe place for animals. Protecting this land is very important for wildlife. It is a state-managed habitat that covers about 14,054 acres (56.87 square kilometers).

Even though the very top of Pine Log Mountain is not officially protected, it is still a significant spot. It is the second-highest point in the Atlanta area. Only the nearby Bear Mountain is taller. The town of Cartersville has its own protected mountains, Vineyard and Pine mountains. From these mountains, you can see Pine Log Mountain to the north. The Etowah River flows through these peaks. Upstream, this river forms Lake Allatoona.
