Pokémon Heroes: Latios and Latias is an exciting animated movie from 2002. It is the fifth film in the popular Pokémon series. This movie was the first to use digital ink and paint for its animation. It was also the last to feature the main voice cast from the first five seasons of the TV show.
The film was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama and made by OLM, Inc.. It stars the voices of Rica Matsumoto, Yuji Ueda, Mayumi Iizuka, Megumi Hayashibara, Shin-ichiro Miki and Ikue Ōtani. The English version was made by 4Kids Entertainment and released in the United States in 2003. The English voices include Veronica Taylor, Eric Stuart, Rachael Lillis and Maddie Blaustein. The story happens during the fifth season of the TV show, Pokémon: Master Quest.
Pokémon Heroes follows the main characters, Ash, Misty, and Brock. They are continuing their journey through the Johto region. The main place in the movie is a city called Alto Mare. This city looks a lot like Venice, Italy, with its many canals. Even though it's part of their Johto adventure, the movie takes place on an island away from the main land.

The Story of Pokémon Heroes
Alto Mare: A City of Water and Secrets
The movie is set in Alto Mare, a beautiful city that looks like Venice. This city is protected by two special dragon Pokémon siblings: Latias and Latios. Long ago, their father, who was also a Latios, saved the city from a bad Pokémon Trainer. He turned the city's streets into canals to protect it.
The people of Alto Mare built a special machine called the Defence Mechanism of Alto Mare, or D.M.A. for short. This machine was made to protect the city if it ever needed help. The father Latios died, leaving behind a powerful item called the Soul Dew. People say it holds his soul and can power the D.M.A.
Trouble Arrives in Alto Mare
In the present day, two sneaky agents named Annie and Oakley find a book about Alto Mare's history. They plan to take control of the D.M.A. Meanwhile, Ash, Misty, and Brock are visiting the city. Ash sees an invisible Latias.
Annie and Oakley are trying to catch Latias. She can disguise herself as a human girl. They use their Espeon and Ariados to try and capture her. Ash and Pikachu bravely step in to help Latias escape. But once she is safe, she disappears when Ash isn't looking.
Discovering the Secret Garden
Ash and his friends visit the museum and meet the curator, Lorenzo. He tells them about Alto Mare's history, the D.M.A., and the old fossilized Pokémon on display. Ash then sees a girl named Bianca who looks just like Latias's human disguise. He chases her, but she doesn't know him.
Suddenly, Latias appears again! She leads Ash and Pikachu to a secret garden. This is where Latias and Latios live. Lorenzo and Bianca, who is his granddaughter, protect them. While Pikachu plays with Latias and Latios, Lorenzo shows Ash the Soul Dew. What they don't know is that Annie and Oakley have sent a small drone into the garden to spy on them.
The Villains' Plan
That night, Annie and Oakley sneak into the secret garden. They manage to capture Latios and steal the Soul Dew. But Latias escapes! Bianca and Lorenzo try to stop the thieves from using the D.M.A., but they are also captured. The Soul Dew and Latios are then used to power the D.M.A. machine.
Latias quickly goes to Ash for help. Latios has a special power called "Sight Sharing." This lets Ash and Latias see what is happening inside the museum. Oakley becomes very powerful and uses the D.M.A. to bring back to life two ancient Pokémon: Kabutops and List of generation I Pokémon#Aerodactyl. She also locks down the entire city to stop anyone from interfering.
Saving the City
Ash, Pikachu, and Latias manage to get past the city's lockdown. They race to the museum, with the revived fossil Pokémon chasing them. Oakley tries to drown Ash, Pikachu, and Latias using the D.M.A. But Latias uses her psychic powers, which makes the D.M.A. go out of control.
When they reach the museum, the trio rescue Latios and shut down the D.M.A. However, Annie tries to take the now dark Soul Dew. It shatters, causing all the water in the city to rush out and then come back as a huge tidal wave! Latias and Latios combine their powers to stop the wave. Sadly, Latios gives his life to save everyone. Kabutops and Aerodactyl disappear again, and Annie and Oakley are trapped inside the D.M.A.
Saying Goodbye
Ash and his friends find Latias and realize that Latios has died. They share one last vision with Latios as he passes away. A few days later, Ash, Misty, and Brock get ready to leave Alto Mare. They say goodbye to Lorenzo, but Bianca is not there.
As they leave the city, they see Bianca on the docks. But she isn't wearing her hat, which is usually how you tell her apart from Latias. The girl gives Ash a drawing of him and Pikachu. She then kisses him on the cheek and leaves without saying anything. Ash says goodbye to "her" anyway. It's left for the viewer to decide if the girl was Bianca or Latias.
The thieves, Annie and Oakley, are saved by the police. They are sent to a high-security prison. There, they look through the belongings of Lawrence III, who was the main villain from Pokémon: The Movie 2000 - The Power of One.
Japanese Version Differences
The Japanese version of the movie had a few important differences from the English version:
- Annie and Oakley were not part of Team Rocket in the Japanese version.
- In the Japanese version, the original Soul Dew might not have had a Latios's soul inside it. However, the new Soul Dew that appears after Latios dies definitely does.
- Latios's Japanese voice was not used in the English version. Instead, they used Latias's voice clips for Latios.
- The American version removed the beginning part where Annie and Oakley read the legend of Alto Mare from the book they were about to steal. Here is what that part said:
A long time ago, Alto Mare was just a small town. One day, an old couple found two children on the beach. They took the children home and cared for them. But a dark cloud appeared over Alto Mare, raining down dark shards. Anything these shards touched became dark. One shard was about to hit the old couple when the children began to glow. All the shards were destroyed! The children showed themselves to be Latios and Latias. More of them appeared, and one carried the Soul Dew. Their power, combined with the Soul Dew's, shone on the dark cloud and made it disappear. To thank them, the two Latios and Latias gave the Soul Dew to the old couple.
