Pokémon The Movie 2000: The Power of One is a 1999 Japanese animated fantasy film. It is the second movie in the famous Pokémon anime series. In Japan, it is known as Pocket Monsters the Movie: Revelation Lugia.
The movie was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama. Many talented voice actors brought the characters to life. These include Rica Matsumoto, Ikue Ōtani, and Unshō Ishizuka.
The Power of One has two main parts. First, there is a short 20-minute film. After that, the main movie plays. The story takes place during the second season of Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands.
In the movie, Ash, Misty, and Tracey visit Shamouti Island. There, they find three powerful legendary bird Pokémon. These are Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno.
A collector named Lawrence III tries to catch these three Pokémon. He wants to awaken Lugia, a very strong legendary Pokémon. This plan puts Lugia and even Ash in great danger.
The film first came out in Japanese theaters on July 17, 1999. An English version was made by 4Kids Entertainment. Warner Bros. released it in the United States on July 21, 2000.
The Power of One made less money than the first Pokémon movie. However, it was still a big success. Many people also thought it was a better movie than the first one.
Movie Story
The movie is split into two exciting parts. One part focuses on Pikachu and his friends. The other part tells the main story of Ash and the legendary Pokémon.
Pikachu's Rescue Adventure
This short film shows only the Pokémon characters. You do not see any of the human trainers. It starts when Togepi wakes up and sees some Ledyba flying. Togepi yawns and then rolls down a hill. It falls into a dark hole.
Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Marill, Venonat, and Psyduck chase after Togepi. They find themselves inside a giant tree. This tree used to be Pikachu's old home.
Pikachu makes a new friend, Elekid. With Elekid's help, they find Togepi. But there's a problem! Togepi has been mistaken for an Exeggcute egg.
The Pokémon go deeper into the tree to find the real missing egg. They meet three dancing Bellossom along the way. A big storm then hits the area. Pikachu and his friends try to keep the Exeggcute eggs safe from the wind.
Other grass Pokémon help them. Snorlax uses his great strength to save everyone. The storm stops when a Dragonair appears and calms the weather. Then, a Chansey shows up. It turns out she had the missing egg all along!
The Exeggcute eggs are reunited. One Exeggcute suddenly evolves into Exeggutor with a Leaf Stone. Pikachu and his friends say goodbye to Elekid and the others. They head back to their trainers. Meanwhile, Meowth tries to find his way to a campsite. He gets caught up in Pikachu's adventures and eventually gives up.
The Power of One
Lawrence III is a Pokémon collector. He wants to make an old legend come true. His plan is to catch the legendary birds: Moltres, Zapdos, and Articuno. He believes this will help him catch the "Beast of the Sea," Lugia.
Lawrence flies his hovercraft to the Orange Islands. He wants to capture the three legendary birds. These birds are called the Titans of Fire, Ice, and Lightning. He successfully catches Moltres.
But catching Moltres causes a big problem. It upsets the balance of power among the birds. The world's weather starts to go wild. Many Pokémon notice these strange changes.
Ash Ketchum and his friends Misty and Tracey Sketchit get caught in a huge storm. They wash ashore on Shamouti Island. This island is in the middle of the Orange Islands.
They learn that the island's festival is about to begin. Ash is chosen as the festival's "Chosen One." A girl named Melody, who is the festival maiden, tells him this.
At the festival's big dinner, Melody explains Ash's task. He must get three crystal balls from each of the legendary birds' islands. Then, he needs to take them to Shamouti's shrine. A talking Slowking guards this shrine. Melody will finish his task by playing the festival's song. This song is actually Lugia's song.
Ash immediately starts his journey, with Pikachu by his side. A sea captain named Maren takes them to Fire Island. Ash and Pikachu find Moltres's treasure there. But Team Rocket interrupts them.
Misty, Tracey, and Melody arrive on Melody's boat. Then, Zapdos appears, wanting to claim the island. Lawrence shows up in his hovercraft. He attacks and captures Zapdos. Ash and his friends are accidentally captured too.
Meanwhile, Professor Oak, Professor Ivy, and Ash's mother Delia Ketchum fly to the islands. Their helicopter crashes on Shamouti. Lawrence frees Ash and the others. He tries to catch Articuno, but this accidentally wakes up Lugia.
Ash and his friends try to stop Lawrence's plans. They free Moltres and Zapdos. The freed birds escape and crash Lawrence's hovercraft.
Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres start fighting each other. Ash and his friends manage to escape. They get Zapdos's treasure. A mysterious water spout takes them back to Shamouti. This spout is actually Lugia.
Lugia first tries to stop the battle. But it is not strong enough against all three birds combined. Lugia then speaks to Ash using its mind. It explains that the birds and the bad weather can only be stopped by the legend's "Chosen One." This Chosen One is Ash.
Ash agrees to go to Articuno's island for the last treasure. But the legendary birds block his way. Team Rocket arrives on a speedboat they made from a small boat and a helicopter propeller. They want to save the world so they can continue being villains.
The group races to Articuno's shrine and gets the last treasure. But before they can escape, the legendary birds appear. They destroy the speedboat. Articuno is knocked out by Moltres and Zapdos.
Lugia rescues Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket. But Team Rocket bravely jumps into the sea. They realize they are slowing Lugia down. Lawrence tries to catch Lugia. But Lugia uses its powerful Aeroblast attack. This destroys Lawrence's airship and knocks out Moltres and Zapdos. Lugia then collapses into the sea.
Misty and Tracey rescue Ash and Pikachu. They go to Shamouti Island's shrine. Ash places the last treasure with the others. Melody plays Lugia's song. This ends the storms and brings peace back to the legendary birds.
Lugia rises from the sea. It brings with it the true "Beast of the Sea." This is an underwater current that was changing the climate. Later, the birds return to their islands. Lugia thanks Ash and leaves.
Delia and the professors arrive. Delia saw what her son did. She asks him to be more careful, and he agrees. Lawrence feels bad about his actions. He decides to start his collection again from scratch.
Team Rocket reaches the island a day later. Slowking tells them that the audience saw their heroic actions. The trio thinks about changing their ways. But they decide to stay the same when they realize their boss might not like the idea.
