Puebla International Airport

Puebla International Airport, officially called Hermanos Serdán International Airport (IATA: PBCICAO: MMPB), is a major international airport in Mexico. It is located near the city of Puebla in the state of Puebla. This airport handles flights for people traveling within Mexico and to other countries.

It is also an important backup airport for Mexico City. This means if Mexico City's airport is too busy or closed, planes can land here. Puebla Airport is part of a group of airports that serve the Mexican capital. This group includes airports in Toluca, Cuernavaca, and Querétaro.

The airport first opened on November 18, 1985. The very first flight was a Mexicana de Aviación Boeing 727-200 from Guadalajara. In 2001, a company called Operadora Estatal de Aeropuertos (OEA) took over running the airport. OEA was created to manage and improve the airport's facilities.

Airport Growth and Improvements

Puebla International Airport has grown a lot in recent years. More passengers are using it, and more flights are coming and going. In 2007, a special center for managing cargo was opened. This center helps with shipping goods by air.

The airport has reached its highest numbers ever for how busy it is. Because of this, the airport's leaders decided to make it even bigger. They plan to expand the areas where planes park and the main building where passengers wait.

Puebla Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in Mexico. In 2021, it served over 565,000 passengers. This number jumped to more than 790,000 passengers in 2022.

Getting to the Airport

There are a few ways to get to Puebla International Airport. You can take the Mexico - Puebla toll motorway. You would exit at San Miguel Xoxtla and drive through Tlaltenango. Another way is to drive along the Cholula - Huejotzingo boulevard. This road leads directly to the airport's entrance.

Airport Facilities

Currently, the airport has space for six large planes to park. The main passenger building can handle about 450 passengers every hour.

Plans are in place to make the new terminal building much larger. It will be more than twice the size of the current one. With an investment of over $15 million, the airport will be able to serve 1.1 million passengers each year. This number could be even higher if flights are spread out well.

The airport also handles a lot of cargo. Each year, it moves about two thousand tons of goods. These include textiles, car parts, machinery, mail, and fresh items like fruits and flowers.

There is also an airport lounge at this airport. It is run by Global Lounge Network.

Sometimes, the airport has to close because of ash from the Popocatépetl volcano. This has happened several times, for example, on May 12, 2012.
