Quincy is a city in Grant County, Washington, in the United States. It is located east of the Columbia River. You can find it on State Route 28 and north of Interstate 90. In 2020, about 7,543 people lived there. Quincy is also one of the closest cities to The Gorge Amphitheatre, a famous outdoor concert venue.

How Quincy's Land Was Formed

Quincy sits on top of ancient lava flows from the Columbia River Basalt Group. These flows are covered by deposits from huge floods that happened long ago. These floods, called the Missoula Floods, had powerful outlets near Quincy. You can even find large rocks called glacial erratics nearby. These rocks were carried all the way from Montana by glaciers! The area also has many rimrock formations, which are cliffs made of rock.

The Great Northern Railway Arrives

Quincy started as a camp for workers building the Great Northern Railway in 1892. It officially became a city on March 27, 1907. The city was named after Quincy, Illinois.

The Grand Coulee Dam's Impact

In 1952, water from the Grand Coulee Dam arrived in Quincy. This event brought big changes to the town, especially for farming.

You can go fishing, hiking, and bird-watching at Quincy Lake. This lake is a leftover from the huge floods that happened long ago from glacial Lake Missoula.

In 2010, there were 6,750 people living in Quincy. They lived in 1,915 households, with 1,541 of these being families. The city had about 1,361 people per square mile.

Farming has always been important to Quincy. The Grand Coulee Dam helped a lot by providing water for irrigation. Major crops grown here include potatoes, wheat, and timothy grass. More recently, people are also growing fruits in orchards and grapes in vineyards.

Technology Companies in Quincy

Since 2007, big technology companies like Microsoft, Yahoo!, Dell, and Intuit have built large data centers in the Quincy area. These companies are attracted to Quincy because it has lots of affordable hydroelectricity (power from water).

These data centers get tax credits from Washington state. This helps bring more jobs and economic growth to the city. New electrical substations are being built to support these companies as they grow.

Tourism and Fun in Quincy

Even though George is closer to The Gorge Amphitheatre, Quincy is the nearest city with hotels and a full grocery store. So, Quincy gets more visitors when concerts are happening at The Gorge.

Quincy's dry climate means it often has weeks or months without rain in the summer. This makes water activities popular at places like Crescent Bar. Quincy is the closest town with services to Crescent Bar. You can enjoy boating, water skiing, hunting, fishing, and even snow skiing during different times of the year.

Quincy's Culture

Every second Saturday in September, Quincy celebrates Farmer-Consumer Awareness Day. For a month before, roads are decorated with signs showing local crops. On the day of the celebration, there's a parade with floats from local schools and farm equipment. You can also go on free tours about farming and geology. There's a produce sale, a tractor pull, a fun run, and many other activities!

Parks and Recreation

Quincy has several parks for everyone to enjoy. One park has an aqua park with a waterslide that has two half-tubes, heated pools, and special areas for younger kids. The park also has a large field with a baseball diamond, a playground, a picnic area, and a small skate-park.
