Ramin Karimloo (born September 19, 1978) is a Canadian actor, singer, and songwriter. He is famous for his work in London's West End and New York's Broadway.
He has played major roles in some of the most popular musicals. These include The Phantom and Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera. He also played Jean Valjean, Enjolras, and Marius Pontmercy in Les Misérables.
Ramin also created leading roles in new musicals. He was Gleb Vaganov in Anastasia and Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl. He also played The Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies. This musical continues the story of The Phantom of the Opera. He is also well-known for playing Anatoly Sergievsky in Chess.
Many Phantom fans know him for playing The Phantom at the 25th Anniversary Performance. This special show was shown in movie theaters worldwide in 2011. He also played Enjolras in Les Misérables in Concert: The 25th Anniversary in 2010.
Ramin made his Broadway debut as Jean Valjean in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables. For this role, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.

Ramin's Amazing Career in Musicals
Starting Out: Early Roles and West End Debut (2001–2005)
After moving to the United Kingdom, Ramin's first role was in a play called Aladdin. He then joined a tour of The Pirates of Penzance in 2001. He played a police officer and also learned the main role of the Pirate King.
In 2002, he played the Pirate King in Bath, England. That same year, he toured with Sunset Boulevard. He played Artie Green and was ready to step in as Joe Gillis.
Ramin first performed in London's West End in Les Misérables. He played Feuilly and was an understudy for Marius and Enjolras. Later, in 2004, he returned to play Enjolras full-time.
In 2003, Ramin played Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera. Three years later, he became the standby for the Phantom. His last daytime show as Raoul was even filmed for a DVD extra. He also had a small role in the 2004 Phantom movie.
He also performed in concerts of Les Misérables (as Marius) and Jesus Christ Superstar (as Simon Zealotes). In 2004, he performed Les Misérables at Windsor Castle for the French president. In 2005, Ramin joined the UK tour of Miss Saigon as Christopher Scott.
Becoming the Phantom: The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies (2006–2010)
Ramin began playing The Phantom in the West End in September 2007. This role earned him a nomination for a Theatregoers' Choice Award. He played the Phantom until November 2009.
He released an album called Within the Six Square Inch. On this album, he sang with Hadley Fraser and Sophia Ragavelas. Both had also been in Les Misérables with him.
In 2008, Ramin was the first actor to play The Phantom in a workshop for Love Never Dies. This musical is a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. He played the role when the show opened in London in March 2010, alongside Sierra Boggess.
He also recorded a song for an album called Songs from the Musicals of Alexander S. Bermange in 2008. In 2009, he recorded for a new musical album, Bluebird, a World War II story. Ramin's last regular show as The Phantom was on November 7, 2009.
In 2010, he continued playing The Phantom in Love Never Dies. He performed this role until the show closed in August 2011. On October 3, 2010, Ramin played Enjolras in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Misérables in London.
Big Performances: Royal Albert Hall and Return to Les Misérables (2011–2013)
In 2011, Ramin sang "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera at the Miss World competition in London.
On October 1 and 2, 2011, he and Sierra Boggess reunited. They played The Phantom and Christine Daaé in the 25th-anniversary show of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall. This show was broadcast live to cinemas around the world.
From November 2011 to March 2012, Ramin returned to Les Misérables. He played the main role of Jean Valjean in London. For this, he won a Theatregoers' Choice Award in 2013.
Ramin also appeared in a BBC2 comedy show called Life's Too Short in 2011. He also had a role in The Spa (TV series) on Sky.
As part of The Phantom of the Opera's 25th anniversary, Ramin performed the title song at The Royal Variety Performance. He sang with Nicole Scherzinger and three other former Phantoms.
His solo album, Ramin, was released in April 2012 in the UK. It came out in Canada and the US in August 2012.
In January 2013, Ramin joined other actors to sing from The Phantom of the Opera for its 25th anniversary on Broadway. He also had a small role in the action film Vendetta.
Ramin then played Jean Valjean in the Canadian version of Les Misérables, starting in September 2013.
Broadway and Beyond: Anastasia and More (2014–2020)
He returned to play Valjean in the 2014 Broadway revival of Les Misérables. This was his Broadway debut. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. His time in the show ended in August 2015.
In February 2015, he played Tom Watson in Parade at Lincoln Center. In May 2015, it was announced that Ramin would lead the musical Prince of Broadway in Japan.
In September 2015, he appeared in an episode of the TV show Blue Bloods. In February 2016, Ramin worked with Sierra Boggess again for a concert of The Secret Garden.
In April 2016, he played Ché in Evita in Vancouver, Canada. From September to December, he starred as Tom in Murder Ballad in London.
In September 2016, it was announced that Ramin would return to Broadway in Anastasia. He played General Gleb Vaganov. The show opened in April 2017, and his last performance was in December 2017.
Ramin performed as Anatoly in Chess at the Kennedy Center in February 2018. He also performed at Carnegie Hall and with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.
In May 2018, he played The Phantom again in concerts in Seoul, Korea. He also performed in Australia and returned to Tokyo, Japan, to play Che in Evita.
In September 2019, the BBC cast him as surgeon Kian Madani in the TV show Holby City. He stayed on the show until 2021. He also played Yurii Zhivago in a concert of Doctor Zhivago in London.
In January 2020, he played Anatoly again in a Japan tour of Chess.
Recent Roles: Funny Girl and The Pirates of Penzance (2021–Present)
In summer 2021, he starred as Joe Gillis in a concert of Sunset Boulevard. He played the role again at the Royal Albert Hall in December.
In October 2021, it was announced that Ramin would return to Broadway as Nick Arnstein in Funny Girl. The show opened in April 2022. He stayed with the show until it closed in September 2023.
In October 2022, Ramin played the Pirate King in a Broadway concert of The Pirates of Penzance. In December 2022, he played Anatoly Sergievsky again in a Broadway concert of Chess.
He reprised his role as Yurii Zhivago in a concert of Doctor Zhivago in London in May 2023.
In February 2023, it was announced that Ramin would play The Phantom in the Italy premiere of The Phantom of the Opera. Performances began in July 2023 in Trieste, Italy. This show also toured to Milan and Monaco.
In October 2023, it was announced Ramin would play Gomez Addams in The Addams Family concert in London in February 2024.
In March 2024, Ramin made his opera debut in Songbird. In June 2024, he performed in Titanic in New York City.
In November 2024, he is set to star as Freddy Benson in a concert run of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in London. In July 2024, he performed at a free summer concert series in New York.
In April 2025, he is set to return to Broadway as the Pirate King in a revival of The Pirates of Penzance.

Ramin co-wrote the song "Why Am I Falling" for a charity event in 2013.
In March 2014, he released an album called The Road to Find Out: East. It included songs from musicals and songs he wrote for his band, Sheytoons.
In 2016, Ramin released his second album, The Road to Find Out: South. This album featured songs he wrote for his band, The Broadgrass Band, and songs from musicals. He went on a UK tour to promote this album in 2017.
In 2022, Ramin released his third album, "The Road to Find Out: North". He performed concerts to promote this album.
In May 2023, Ramin released his fourth and final album in the series, "The Road To Find Out: West". He also performed concerts to promote this album.
