Roo is a fun and friendly character created in 1926 by A. A. Milne. He first appeared in the book Winnie-the-Pooh. Roo is a young kangaroo, also known as a joey, and his mother is Kanga. Like many of the Pooh characters, Roo was based on a stuffed toy that belonged to Milne's son, Christopher Robin Milne. Sadly, the real stuffed Roo toy was lost in the 1930s.

Roo joins in the exciting adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh, a cuddly teddy bear, and his friends. These friends include Piglet, a small toy pig; Eeyore, a toy donkey; Owl, a wise live owl; Rabbit, a clever live rabbit; and Christopher Robin, a human boy. Roo is first introduced in a chapter called "In Which Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest and Piglet has a Bath." His good friend Tigger doesn't show up until the next book, The House at Pooh Corner. Roo has also appeared in many cartoons and movies over the years.

Roo's Character and Adventures

Roo is a young kangaroo, or joey, and his mother is Kanga. He is the smallest animal in the stories, besides Rabbit's many relatives and Alexander Beetle. He is so small that Kanga sometimes can't tell the difference between him and Piglet when Piglet jumps into her pouch! In the original drawings by E. H. Shepard, Roo looks just a tiny bit smaller than Piglet. He's also small enough to fall into mouse holes when he's practicing his jumps.

Like most of the characters in the Winnie-the-Pooh books, Roo was inspired by one of Christopher Robin Milne's stuffed toys. In the illustrations, Roo has brown fur and a cute upturned tail.

Roo in the Books

Roo and Kanga arrive in the Forest in Chapter VII of Winnie-the-Pooh. He also appears in other chapters of that book and in The House at Pooh Corner. Roo has many fun adventures. He gets "kidnapped" by Rabbit in one story. He also goes on an "expotition" (expedition) to the North Pole, where he gets an unexpected swimming lesson. Roo attends Christopher Robin's party for Pooh and even gets stuck in a tree with Tigger. He also loves playing Poohsticks with his friends.

Roo's Favorite Things

Unlike some of the other characters, Roo doesn't have a specific favorite food that is mentioned often. However, his mother, Kanga, sometimes makes him watercress sandwiches. He doesn't really like the malt extract his mother gives him as "strengthening medicine" after meals, but he usually takes it anyway.

Roo has many friends in the Hundred Acre Wood. His closest friends include Tigger, Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, and Christopher Robin.

Roo in Cartoons and Movies

Roo has appeared in many cartoon versions of the Winnie the Pooh stories. He was first voiced by Clint Howard. Over the years, many different actors have given voice to Roo, including Dori Whitaker, Dick Billingsley, Kim Christianson, Nicholas Melody, Nikita Hopkins, Jimmy Bennett, Max Burkholder, Wyatt Hall, and Sara Sheen.

In the cartoons, Roo is usually the smallest of the main characters. He has brown fur and often wears a light blue shirt. Even though he's young, Roo often says things that make him seem very wise for his age. Sometimes, he even seems wiser than some of the older characters!

Roo also stars in his own movie, Springtime with Roo. He becomes very good friends with Lumpy the Heffalump in Pooh's Heffalump Movie. Roo has also made guest appearances in House of Mouse and Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse. In 2018, Roo made his first live-action appearance in the movie Christopher Robin, where he was voiced by Sara Sheen.
