Meet the Original Characters from the Books

These characters first appeared in the classic "Winnie-the-Pooh" books by A.A. Milne.

Winnie-the-Pooh: The Honey-Loving Bear

Winnie-the-Pooh, or Pooh for short, is a friendly and soft-voiced teddy bear. He might seem a little naive and slow sometimes, but he's always kind and thoughtful. Pooh loves to help his friends and tries his best in every situation. His biggest love is honey, which often gets him into funny trouble!

In the books, Pooh is also a talented poet. He often makes up poems and little songs called "hums." He's humble about being a bit slow, but he's proud of his creative side.

In the Disney movies, Pooh wears a red shirt. His famous sayings are "Oh, bother!" and "Think, think, think." Many actors have voiced Pooh, including Sterling Holloway and Jim Cummings.

Christopher Robin: Pooh's Best Friend

Christopher Robin is the main human character in the books. He's cheerful and caring, and all the animals look up to him. Even though he's a child, he's often wiser and more grown-up than many of the animals. Pooh thinks of Christopher Robin and Piglet as his very best friends.

As the books go on, Christopher Robin grows up. In the last chapter of The House at Pooh Corner, he starts school. He says goodbye to his stuffed animals, asking Pooh to always remember him.

In the Disney movies, Christopher Robin is 10 years old. He's still best friends with Pooh and Piglet. Many actors have played Christopher Robin, and Ewan McGregor played him as an adult in the 2018 movie Christopher Robin.

Tigger: The Bouncy Tiger

Tigger is Pooh's energetic and fun-loving tiger friend. He loves to bounce around and often bounces on his friends! Tigger is full of energy, very outgoing, and always ready for an adventure. In the books, he lives with Kanga and Roo, but in Disney movies, he lives on his own.

In the Disney films, Tigger sometimes mispronounces words, which is quite funny. He can cause a bit of chaos, but he's also tough, brave, and always optimistic. He's very protective of Roo. Tigger is proud to be unique and loves to bounce, as you can hear in his song "The Wonderful Thing about Tiggers." Paul Winchell and Jim Cummings are famous voices for Tigger.

Piglet: The Brave Little Pig

Piglet is a small pig and Pooh's other best friend. In the books, he often follows Pooh's lead, though he can get scared easily. But as the stories continue, Piglet shows how brave he can be when there's a problem, especially with Pooh's encouragement. He really likes "haycorns" (acorns).

In the Disney series, Piglet is kind, gentle, and usually quite shy. But with Pooh by his side, he often finds the courage to face his fears. John Fiedler and Travis Oates have voiced Piglet.

Eeyore: The Gloomy Donkey

Eeyore is Pooh's quiet, often sad, and sarcastic donkey friend. He's a supporting character who always seems to be a bit gloomy. Eeyore often has trouble keeping his tail attached because the nail holding it keeps falling out. He lives in a house made of sticks in a quiet part of the forest and enjoys eating thistles.

In the Disney cartoons, Eeyore speaks slowly and is more careful than the other animals. He might not always want to join in their plans, but he usually goes along with them. In the Disney versions, he's often a bit more positive than in the books. His famous saying is "Thanks for noticing." Peter Cullen is a well-known voice for Eeyore.

Rabbit: The Organized Friend

Rabbit is one of the characters not based on a toy. He was inspired by a real rabbit. He's friendly but can also be impatient and easily annoyed. Rabbit thinks he's the smartest animal in the Forest. He loves rules, planning, and order, and often tells others what to do. But deep down, he cares a lot about his friends. Rabbit is also able to read, which is special among the animals.

In the Disney films, he's very proud of his garden and doesn't like it when his friends mess it up. Ken Sansom and Tom Kenny have voiced Rabbit.

Kanga: Roo's Loving Mom

Kanga is a female kangaroo and the mother of Roo. They live in a house near the Sandy Pit. Kanga is the only main female character in the books and most Winnie-the-Pooh stories. She was based on a stuffed toy belonging to Christopher Robin Milne.

Kanga is kind, calm, and patient. She likes to keep things clean and tidy. She gives motherly advice and food to anyone who needs it. She's very protective of Roo, but also has a good sense of humor. In one story, she pretends not to notice that Piglet has swapped places with Roo, giving Piglet Roo's bath!

In the Disney movies, Kanga's personality is similar. She's sensible and gives Roo some independence. Barbara Luddy and Kath Soucie have voiced Kanga.

Roo: The Playful Joey

Roo is Kanga's cheerful, playful, and energetic son. He's the youngest character in the main group. When Kanga and Roo first arrive in the forest, everyone thinks Kanga is scary, but they soon become friends. In the books, Kanga welcomes Tigger into her home and treats him like her own son.

In the Disney stories, Roo is a young child who wants to be independent. He has a very close friendship with Tigger and later becomes good friends with Lumpy, a young Heffalump. Clint Howard and Nikita Hopkins are among the actors who have voiced Roo.

Owl: The Wise (But Not Always) Bird

Owl is an older, talkative character who likes to act as a mentor and teacher. He wasn't based on a stuffed toy, so he looks more like a real owl in the drawings.

In the books, Owl acts superior but is kind. He can get annoyed if his friends ignore his long speeches. He likes to seem very knowledgeable, and the other animals think he is. But like most of them, he isn't very good at spelling; he even spells his own name "Wol"! He lives in a grand tree house. Hal Smith and Andre Stojka have voiced Owl in Disney adaptations.

Other Characters in the Books

Bees

A swarm of honeybees appears right in the first chapter. They live in a hive where Pooh often tries to get his beloved honey. These bees appear in almost all Disney versions, often causing trouble for Pooh and his friends when they try to get honey.

Jagulars: The Tree-Dropping Creatures

Jagulars are imagined jaguar-like creatures. They are only mentioned in The House at Pooh Corner when Pooh and Piglet mistake Tigger for one. Pooh says they yell "Help" and drop on you from trees! Jagulars have appeared as antagonists in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and in some video games.

Backson: The Misunderstood Monster

The Backson is a creature imagined by the main characters in the 2011 animated film Winnie the Pooh. The animals think he has captured Christopher Robin because they misunderstood a note saying Christopher Robin would be "back soon." Owl describes the Backson as a scary purple and blue creature who ruins everyday items.

However, in a scene after the movie credits, the Backson turns out to be real, but he's actually a kind and helpful creature who wants to return lost items to people.
