SPoT Coffee and Spot Coffee (Canada) Ltd. (often called SPP) is a company that runs coffee shops, also known as cafés. It started in Buffalo, New York, and now has locations in both the United States and Canada. SPoT Coffee is known for creating friendly, community-focused places where people can enjoy coffee and other treats.
Where SPoT Coffee Shops Are Located
SPoT Coffee first opened its doors in Buffalo in 1996. Over the years, the company has grown. By 2019, SPoT had 17 coffee houses and smaller "Express" cafés. Most of these, 13 to be exact, are found in and around Buffalo.
Other locations include Rochester, New York, Saratoga Springs, and Glens Falls, New York. There is also a SPoT Coffee in Connecticut. In 2009, a new SPoT opened in Amherst, New York, called Williamsville SPoT. The company also added a location in Delray Beach, Florida, in 2010. This Florida spot even won an award for helping to preserve a historic building.
More recently, SPoT opened an Express café inside the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in June 2018. Later that same year, new locations opened in Snyder, New York, and in West Hartford, Connecticut.
How Employees Formed a Union
Sometimes, groups of workers decide to form a labor union. A union is like a team that helps employees work together to improve their jobs. This can include asking for better pay or safer working conditions.
At SPoT Coffee, some employees wanted to form a union. They held meetings to talk about their jobs. In August 2019, the employees at several SPoT Coffee locations in Buffalo voted to create a union. The vote was 43 in favor and 6 against. This decision meant that SPoT Coffee baristas became some of the few coffee shop workers in the country to have union representation. This vote included about 90 workers at the Hertel, Delaware, and Elmwood Avenue locations, as well as the one on Main Street in Williamsville.
