Saltdean's Past
Saltdean used to be open farmland. It was part of the village of Rottingdean. Almost no one lived there until 1924. That year, land was sold to build houses.
A businessman named Charles W. Neville helped this happen. He also built parts of nearby Peacehaven and Rottingdean.
Saltdean has a beach mostly made of small stones. In front of the beach is a path called the Undercliff Walk. You can get to it from the cliff top. There are also steps from the road or a tunnel from the nearby Lido. The Undercliff Walk goes all the way to Brighton. It ends near the Palace Pier.
The buildings closest to the beach look very different. Some were built between the two World Wars. They show styles like Bauhaus and Cubism. Some buildings also have a Spanish look.
The most famous building is the Saltdean Lido. It is a community center with a public library. It also has a famous outdoor swimming pool. The architect R.W.H. Jones designed it. He also designed the old Grand Ocean Hotel. This hotel looks like an 'ocean liner' and is built in the Art Deco style.
Saltdean is a well-off village. It is a suburb of Brighton and Hove. But its eastern side is managed by the Lewes District Council.
Saltdean's Location
Saltdean is located by the sea. It sits in a 'Dean', which means 'dry valley' in old English. The hills of the South Downs National Park surround it. These hills form a big dip or valley.
In this valley, you will find the oval-shaped Saltdean Park and the Lido. They both look out over the sea.
The roads in Saltdean are lined with trees. They curve in wide oval shapes. This design helps them follow the natural shape of the land. The village was planned to be very different from nearby Peacehaven. Peacehaven has a more grid-like street system.
