Sam Witwer's Early Life
Sam Witwer was born on October 20, 1977, and grew up in Glenview, Illinois. As a child, he loved spending his time playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, working on computers, and making music. These hobbies were more exciting to him than school!
He went to Glenbrook South High School, where he enjoyed drama and theater classes. He was also the lead singer of a high high school band called "Love Plumber." After high school, his parents encouraged him to apply to drama schools. He was accepted into the Juilliard School, a very famous performing arts school.
After two years at Juilliard, Sam left because he felt he wasn't taking it seriously enough. He decided to fully pursue acting after getting advice from actor Bruce Campbell online.
Sam Witwer's Acting Career
Sam Witwer's first acting job was in a commercial for the Chicago Bulls basketball team. Soon after, he started getting speaking roles in popular TV shows, like ER.
One of his first big roles was playing a pilot named 'Crashdown' in Battlestar Galactica. He also credits his role as Neil Perry in the show Dexter for helping his career. Sam also appeared in the movie The Mist.
Famous TV Roles
From 2008 to 2009, Sam Witwer played Davis Bloome in season 8 of Smallville. His character was the human form of the powerful villain Doomsday. Fans really liked his performance in Smallville. He was even offered a chance to play Zod in season 9, but he decided not to, feeling it would be too confusing for the story and audience.
Sam also had a small, uncredited role as a zombie soldier in a tank in the first season of The Walking Dead. This reunited him with director Frank Darabont from The Mist. Interestingly, years later in 2019, Sam played the main character, Deacon St. John, in the video game Days Gone, which is also about a zombie apocalypse.
From 2011 to 2014, Sam starred in the North American version of Being Human. He played Aidan Waite, a lead character who was a vampire. The show was very popular and ran for four seasons.
In 2016, Sam Witwer played Mr. Hyde in the TV show Once Upon a Time. He appeared in several episodes of the sixth season.
In 2018, Sam joined the main cast of Supergirl on The CW. He played the main bad guy for the fourth season, Ben Lockwood / Agent Liberty.

Sam learned a lot about playing Kirk by studying Shatner's acting style, especially how Kirk always leads the scene and takes the audience with him.
