Sancti Spíritus is one of the provinces in Cuba. Its capital city is also called Sancti Spíritus. Another important city in the province is Trinidad.
The southern coast of this province is mostly flat land. However, the western part of Sancti Spíritus province has many mountains. In the southeast, you can find lots of mangrove trees and swampy areas.
The largest man-made lake in Cuba is located here. It's called the Embalse Zaza.

What People Do in Sancti Spíritus
Tourism is a very important activity for the province. Many visitors come to see the old city of Trinidad. This city is a World Heritage Site, which means it's a special place recognized globally. Trinidad has many old buildings from the time of the Spanish conquest in the 1500s. You won't see many new buildings there!
Like most of Cuba, growing sugarcane and raising cattle are also big parts of the economy. Some tobacco and rice are also grown in the province.
A Look at History
During the 1600s, Dutch and British pirates tried to take control of this area. However, they were not very successful. The Spanish soldiers managed to keep them away.
From 1660 to 1680, the city of Trinidad faced many problems from pirates. These pirates came from Jamaica and Tortuga. The pirates even burned down the city two times!
The provinces of Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus, and Villa Clara were once all part of a larger province. This older province was called Santa Clara, but it no longer exists.
