Sandgate is famous for its history and interesting places. It is home to Sandgate Castle, a special fort built a long time ago. Famous people like writer H. G. Sandgate used to be its own independent area, called an urban district, from 1894 to 1934. Before that, it was part of a nearby parish called Cheriton. In 1934, Sandgate became part of Folkestone.

However, in 2004, the village became its own civil parish again. This means it has its own local government. The parish of Sandgate covers an area of about 2.17 square kilometers (0.84 square miles).

How Did Sandgate's Railway Work?

A railway line was built in Sandgate in 1874. It helped people travel to and from the village. However, this railway line stopped carrying passengers in 1951. Today, not much of the old railway is left. You can still see parts of a tall bridge at the bottom of Hospital Hill.
