Scholes-in-Elmet is a friendly village located in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Its name comes from an Old Norse word, skáli, which means "temporary shed."
This village is sometimes called Scholes-in-Elmet to help people tell it apart from other villages with the same name. It's also similar to nearby villages like Barwick-in-Elmet and Sherburn in Elmet. Scholes is part of the civil parish of Barwick in Elmet and Scholes. It sits in the Harewood area of Leeds City Council. In 2011, about 2,266 people lived here.

History of Scholes
In the 1800s, a man named Colonel Frederick Trench-Gascoigne owned a lot of land and buildings in the Scholes area. He rented out many houses, mines, woodlands, and farms. His properties were in Scholes and nearby places like Swarcliffe and Garforth.
In the mid-1880s, a person named Isaac Chippindale started the Scholes Brick and Tile Works. This company made high-quality bricks. Many houses in the area were built using these bricks. The old brick kilns and house were taken down in the early 1980s. Now, the area is known as "Chippy's Quarry." It has two small lakes where people can go fishing.

Scholes has many useful places for its residents. You can find two pubs, a dentist, and a doctor's office. There is also a hairdressers and a beauty salon. The village has a library and two churches.
For bigger shopping trips, people usually go to nearby Seacroft or Cross Gates. The Seacroft Green shopping centre has a large Tesco supermarket. The Cross Gates Shopping Centre has many popular shops. Other nearby towns for shopping include Garforth and Wetherby.
The Barley Corn is a historic pub on Main Street. Another pub, The Buffers, used to be the village's railway station. It has been turned into a pub and restaurant.
Getting Around Scholes (Transport)
Scholes is located close to major roads. These include the Leeds Outer Ring Road, the A64, and the M1. The East Leeds Orbital Road, a new road, also serves the village.
Scholes Railway Station opened in 1876. It was part of the Cross Gates to Wetherby railway line. However, the station and the line closed in 1964. Today, local bus services 64 and 11 help people get around. These buses are run by First Leeds. The closest international airport is Leeds Bradford Airport. It is about 12.4 miles (20 km) away.
