Gionata Boschetti (born December 7, 1992), known as Sfera Ebbasta, is a famous Italian rapper. He became well-known after his album XDVR was released in 2015. He made this album with producer Charlie Charles.
His music quickly became very popular in Italy. He continued this success with albums like Sfera Ebbasta (2016), Rockstar (2018), and Famoso (2020). Sfera Ebbasta was the best-selling music artist in Italy during the 2010s. He also holds the record for having the most songs reach number one in Italy, with 24 hits.
About Sfera Ebbasta's Early Life
Growing Up in Italy
Sfera Ebbasta was born in Sesto San Giovanni, a town near Milan, Italy. He grew up in a nearby town called Cinisello Balsamo. His parents separated when he was two years old. Sadly, his father passed away when Sfera was only 13. He decided to leave school at the age of 14 to focus on his music.
Starting His Music Journey (2011–2013)
Sfera Ebbasta began making music by uploading videos to YouTube between 2010 and 2012. At first, his videos did not get much attention. During this time, he met producer Charlie Charles in Milan. They became friends and formed a music group called Billion Headz Money Gang, also known as BHMG. On September 15, 2013, he released his first mixtape, Emergenza Mixtape Vol. 1.
XDVR Album Success (2014–2016)
Starting in November 2014, Sfera Ebbasta and Charlie Charles created many songs together. They shared these songs and their music videos on YouTube. After releasing the song Panette, record labels started to notice him.
On June 11, 2015, Sfera Ebbasta released his first studio album, XDVR. The name stands for "per davvero," which means "for real" in English. This album included songs he had released earlier and some new ones. It was first available for free download. Later, it was re-released on November 23 through Roccia Music, a record label owned by Marracash and Shablo. This new version included extra songs like XDVRMX and Ciny. The song Ciny is about his hometown, Cinisello.
The album became very popular in the underground music scene. It also helped make trap music more well-known in Italy. Music critics liked the album, but some people criticized it. This was because many songs talked about life in suburban areas, including his city, Cinisello Balsamo.
In 2016, Sfera Ebbasta worked with French rapper SCH on a song called Cartine Cartier. SCH was impressed by Sfera's music when he visited Italy.
Sfera Ebbasta Album (2016–2017)
On September 9, 2016, Sfera Ebbasta released his first solo album, also called Sfera Ebbasta. This album was released by Universal and Def Jam. Before the album came out, he released singles like BRNBQ and Figli di papà. BRNBQ earned a gold record, and Figli di papà became platinum.
In this album, Sfera Ebbasta explored new themes, moving away from some of his earlier, tougher topics. He promoted the album on TV shows and radio programs. The album was a big hit in Italy, reaching the top of the music charts. It also appeared on charts in other European countries. The album was certified gold by FIMI. From October 2016 to March 2017, Sfera Ebbasta went on the Sfera Ebbasta Tour to promote his album across Italy.
Rockstar Album (2017–2018)
On March 10, 2017, Sfera Ebbasta released the single Dexter. He also joined Charlie Charles's song Bimbi with other rappers like Izi, Rkomi, Tedua, and Ghali. Later, Sfera Ebbasta performed at music awards shows, where he introduced a new song called Tran Tran. This song was released digitally on June 9.
On September 22 of the same year, Guè Pequeno released his song Lamborghini, which featured Sfera Ebbasta. This song was very successful in Italy, reaching number one on the Top Singoli chart.
On January 3, 2018, Sfera Ebbasta announced his third studio album, Rockstar. Charlie Charles produced it, and it was released on January 19. The album had both Italian and international versions. The international version included collaborations with artists like Tinie Tempah, Rich the Kid, and Quavo. Rockstar debuted at the top of the FIMI Album Ranking. All 11 songs from the album also reached the top twelve positions on the Top Single chart. Thanks to this album, Sfera Ebbasta became the first Italian artist to be in the top 100 of Spotify's global ranking.
On March 13, 2018, Sfera Ebbasta and Charlie Charles started their own record label, Billion Headz Music Group. On May 4, they released a new single called "Peace & Love", which also featured Ghali.
On December 7, 2018, a new version of Rockstar was released, called Popstar Edition. It included remixes and new songs like Popstar, Uh Ah Hey, and Happy Birthday.
On the night of December 7 to 8, 2018, Sfera Ebbasta was scheduled to perform at a nightclub in Corinaldo, Italy. During the event, a sudden crowd movement caused a tragic incident, resulting in six deaths and many injuries.
New Music and Famoso (2018–Present)
After Rockstar, Sfera Ebbasta worked with many Italian and international rappers on various songs. He did not announce a new album right away.
On May 22, 2020, he was featured on the song "Elegante" from DrefGold's album Elo. On June 5, the song "Miami" was released, a collaboration with US rapper Ronny J and Argentinian rapper Khea. A week later, he released "M' manc" with producer Shablo and Neapolitan rapper Geolier.
On June 26, 2020, Sfera Ebbasta joined Guè Pequeno on the song "Immortale" from his album Mr. Fini. Another collaboration happened on July 10, when Mahmood released "Dorado", featuring Sfera Ebbasta and Colombian rapper Feid. On September 11, Sfera Ebbasta appeared on the song "Soldi sulla carta" from the album Father son and spirit by FSK Satellite.
In early October 2020, Sfera Ebbasta hinted on Instagram that he was working on a new album. On October 13, he announced the title, FAMO$O, which means "FAMOU$" with a dollar sign. This album was special because it featured many well-known international artists like Offset, Future, Steve Aoki, Diplo, and J Balvin. The only Italian artists featured were Marracash and Guè Pequeno. The album was released on November 20, 2020. Important producers like Steve Aoki, Diplo, and London on da Track also worked on the project. The last song, "$€ Freestyle", was the first track produced by Sfera Ebbasta himself.
Along with the album, Sfera Ebbasta released a documentary called Famoso on Prime Video. It shared stories about his music journey and how the new album was made.
On October 28, he released the first single from the album, "Bottiglie Privè". This song was produced by his long-time collaborator, Charlie Charles.
When Famoso was released, Sfera Ebbasta also announced a partnership with the famous American fast food chain KFC.
In July 2021, his song "Mi fai impazzire" ("You drive me crazy") with Italian rapper Blanco reached number one on the Italian singles chart. This was his 18th number one single, and it was certified nine times platinum by FIMI.
