Shelby is a town located in Orleans County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 5,319 people lived there.

The Town of Shelby is found in the southwest part of Orleans County.

History of Shelby

The Town of Shelby was created in 1818. It was formed by dividing the Town of Ridgeway into two separate towns.

Since 2002, Shelby and Ridgeway have been working together. They share some services to save money. For example, they have one town court that serves both towns.

A special old building, the John Shelp Cobblestone House, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008. This means it's an important historical site.

Geography of Shelby

Shelby covers a total area of about 46.7 square miles (121.03 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a small part being water.

The town shares its western border with the Town of Royalton in Niagara County. Its southern border is next to the Town of Alabama in Genesee County.

  • Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge – A part of this wildlife area is located in Shelby. It's a place where wild animals are protected.
  • Medina – The southern part of the Village of Medina is within the town of Shelby.
  • Millville – This community got its name because it used to have many mills powered by water. It's in the northeast part of town on NY-31A.
  • East Shelby – This area is located right on the border with the Town of Barre.
  • Oak Orchard River – This stream is often called the Oak Orchard Creek in this area.
  • Oak Orchard Wildlife Management Area – A small part of this state conservation area is in the southern part of the town.
  • West Shelby – This area is in the southwest corner of the town, near the Iroquois Refuge.
  • Shelby Center – This small community is south of Medina on NY-63. It's where Joseph Ellicott bought land because of a waterfall on the Oak Orchard River.
  • Shelby Basin – This was once a wide part of the Erie Canal. Barges could turn around here. It's located west of Medina.
  • Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area – Another state conservation area, partly located in the southwest corner of the town.
