Shenandoah Mountain is a long mountain chain, or ridge, that stretches about 73 miles (117 kilometers). It runs through parts of Virginia and West Virginia in the United States. This mountain ridge is narrow and has steep sides, with a top made of sandstone.

The name "Shenandoah" comes from an old Iroquoian word. It means 'deer', which shows how important these animals were in the area.

Where is Shenandoah Mountain Located?

Shenandoah Mountain starts in northern Bath County, Virginia. It then goes all the way to southern Hardy County, West Virginia. As it travels, the top of the mountain forms the border between several counties.

These include Highland and Augusta counties in Virginia. It also marks the border between Pendleton County, West Virginia, and Rockingham County, Virginia.

Part of the Appalachian Mountains

Shenandoah Mountain is part of a larger group of mountains called the Appalachian Mountains. Specifically, it belongs to the Ridge and Valley area. This means it's one of many long, parallel ridges and valleys in the region.

The mountain also forms part of the western edge of the famous Shenandoah Valley. It is also considered part of the easternmost Allegheny Mountains.

Shenandoah Mountain and the National Forest

Almost all of Shenandoah Mountain is located inside the George Washington National Forest. This is a large protected area where people can enjoy nature. It's a great place for hiking, camping, and seeing wildlife.

A major road, U.S. Route 33, crosses over Shenandoah Mountain. This road connects the towns of Franklin, West Virginia, and Harrisonburg, Virginia.
