Slayton is a small city located in Murray County, Minnesota, in the United States. It's the main town, also known as the county seat, for Murray County. In 2020, about 2,013 people lived there.

History of Slayton
Slayton was founded in 1882. It was named after Charles W. Slayton, who helped plan the city.
Geography and Location
Slayton is located in the middle of Murray County. It's surrounded by Slayton Township, which is a separate area.
Two important roads, U.S. Highway 59 and Minnesota State Highway 30, pass through the city. US 59 goes north about 36 miles to Marshall. It also goes south about 30 miles to Worthington.
MN 30 joins US 59 north of town. However, it then turns off towards Westbrook, which is about 22 miles east of Slayton. To the west, MN 30 leads about 28 miles to Pipestone.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that Slayton covers a total area of about 2.06 square miles. All of this area is land.

Slayton's Population in 2010
In 2010, the city of Slayton had 2,153 people living there. There were 946 households and 566 families. The city had about 1098.5 people per square mile.
Most of the people in Slayton were White (98.0%). A small number were African American (0.3%), Native American (0.1%), or Asian (0.2%). About 1.2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 26.0% of households had children under 18 living with them. Nearly half (48.2%) were married couples. About 35.9% of all households were individuals living alone. Many (19.9%) of these were people aged 65 or older.
The average age in Slayton was 43.5 years. About 23.3% of residents were under 18. About 26.9% were 65 years old or older. The city had slightly more females (53.0%) than males (47.0%).
Education in Slayton
Slayton is home to the Murray County Central School District. This is one of only two school districts left in Murray County. The other is Fulda Public School.
The school usually has about 60 students in each grade. Chandler-Lake Wilson High School closed before the year 2000. This happened after a very strong tornado hit the area. That school then joined with Slayton.
Students from nearby towns also attend MCC. These towns include Avoca, Chandler, Currie, Iona, and Lake Wilson. Jacob Scandrett is the high school principal. Joe Meyer is the superintendent.
Murray County Central Marching Band
The Murray County Central marching band is well-known. They compete in many events across the Midwest. In the last ten years, they have marched in five different states. These include Minnesota, South Dakota, Florida, Illinois, and Missouri.
In 2009, the band traveled to Orlando, Florida. They marched in the famous Disney World Parade. In 2010, they won first place at the Tri-State Band Festival in Luverne, Minnesota. Since 2009, the band has always placed in the top two at this festival.
The Marching Rebels also earned second place at the Festival of Bands Competition. This event is held in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were the highest-placing public school in their competition class. Michael Helgeson is their director.
