Stites was named after Jacob Stites, who came from New Jersey. He was the first person to claim land here in 1897 under the Homestead Act. This act allowed people to get land from the government if they lived on it and farmed it. Jacob Stites sold his land two years later, but he got to choose the city's name. That's how Stites got its name!

In 1900, Stites became the end point for a special train line called the Northern Pacific Railroad. This line later became part of the Camas Prairie Railroad. The train tracks went from Lewiston up the Clearwater River to Kooskia, and then turned south to Stites. These old train tracks were removed in the 1980s. Stites officially became a city in early 1905.

A highway bridge that crossed the Salmon River near Riggins was built in 1911. In 1936, a new bridge was built there, and the old one was moved about 50 miles (80 km) north to Stites.
