A Look at Story's History
The area around Story has a rich history from the American Frontier. It was a place where early settlers and Plains Indians often had conflicts. The famous Bozeman Trail passed very close to Story in the 1860s.
Fort Phil Kearny and Important Battles
Just 5 miles south of Story is Fort Phil Kearny, which is now a State Historic Site. This fort was very important during Red Cloud's War (1866-1868). The Plains Indians called it the "hated post on the Little Piney."
Two major battles happened near the fort: the Fetterman Fight and the Wagon Box Fight. The Fetterman Fight in 1866 was a big victory for the Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho Indians against the U.S. Army. Eighty-one U.S. soldiers were killed, making it one of the worst defeats for the U.S. Army on the Great Plains at that time.
The Wagon Box Fight in 1867 involved Lakota Sioux and soldiers from Fort Phil Kearny. In 1960, Fort Phil Kearny, along with the sites of these battles, was named a National Historic Landmark.
Story as a Tourist Spot
In the early 1900s, when cars became popular, the Story area became a favorite place for tourists. Many people, including Boy Scout troops, come here for camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities. It's still a popular spot today!
