Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi (Arabic: سلطان بن محمد القاسمي, romanized: Sulṭān bin Muḥammad al-Qāsimī; born 2 July 1939) is an important leader in the United Arab Emirates. He is the current and 11th ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah. He has been a member of the Federal Supreme Council of the UAE since January 1972.
Sheikh Sultan is well-known for his many books, his strong support for education, and his efforts to protect cultural places. For example, he helped restore the Al Hisn Fort in Sharjah in 1970. He also served as the first Minister of Education for the United Arab Emirates in 1971. As a scholar, he has written many historical documents, stories, poems, and plays about the Middle East and North Africa.

Early Life and Education
Sultan's mother was Maryam bint Sheikh Ghanem Al Shamsi (1915–2010). He grew up with four brothers and two sisters. Their names are Khalid, Sheikh Saqr, Abdul Aziz, Abdullah, Shiekha, and Naema.
In 1948, when he was nine years old, Sultan started school at Eslah As Qasimia School. He finished his early education in Sharjah, Kuwait City, and Dubai. Later, he went to Cairo University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1971.
He continued his studies and earned two PhDs. He got a PhD in history from Exeter University in 1985. He also earned another PhD in the political geography of the Gulf from Durham University in 1999.
Career Highlights
Becoming Minister of Education
In December 1971, Sheikh Sultan was given an important role. He was appointed as the very first Minister of Education for the United Arab Emirates. This shows his early commitment to learning and schools.
Leading Universities
Sheikh Sultan has played a big part in higher education. In 1997, he became the president of both the American University of Sharjah and the University of Sharjah. He also became a visiting professor at his old university, the University of Exeter, in 1998.
In 1999, he became a professor of modern history of the Gulf at the University of Sharjah. Later, in 2008, he also became a visiting professor at Cairo University.
Ruler of Sharjah
Sheikh Sultan became the ruler of Sharjah on January 25, 1972. He took over after his brother, Khalid bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, passed away.
He has been the ruler of Sharjah continuously since 1972. In 2022, Sheikh Sultan celebrated a very special milestone. He marked his 50th anniversary as the Ruler of Sharjah.
Writing and Films
Sheikh Sultan is a very active writer. By 2023, he had written at least 82 books. These books cover many topics, including history, literature, and plays.
One of his historical books was even turned into a film. In 2020, a movie called Khorfakkan was released. It was based on his book Khorfakkan’s Resistance Against the Portuguese Invasion of September 1507. The film tells the true story of how the city of Khorfakkan bravely fought against a Portuguese invasion in the 1500s.
