Tasco is a town and a municipality in the Boyacá department of Colombia. It is part of the Valderrama Province. Tasco is located on a high plateau called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. The land here is quite high, ranging from about 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) to 3,800 meters (12,500 feet) above sea level.

The Chicamocha River flows through this area. Tasco shares its borders with several other towns. To the north is Socha, to the south are Corrales and Gámeza. To the east is Socotá, and to the west are Betéitiva and Paz de Río. The main town center of Tasco is about 2,530 meters (8,300 feet) high. It is located about 115 kilometers (71 miles) from Tunja, which is the capital city of the Boyacá department.

What Does Tasco Mean?

The name Tasco comes from the Chibcha language. This was the language spoken by the Muisca people, who lived in this area long ago. In their language, Tasco means "Enclosure or mansion of the sovereign." This suggests it was an important place for their leaders.

Before the Spanish arrived, the area where Tasco is now was home to two native tribes: the Boche and the Pirgua. Modern Tasco was officially started on October 15, 1577. Interesting discoveries have been made in Tasco, including ancient mummies.
