The town of Tishomingo is named after a very important Chickasaw leader called Tishomingo. He signed a special agreement, the Treaty of Pontotoc, in 1832.

Tishomingo was a brave warrior. He fought alongside Major-General Anthony Wayne against the Shawnee people in an area known as the Northwest Territory. This area is now part of the Midwest United States. For his service, President George Washington gave him a silver medal.

During the War of 1812, Tishomingo also served under General Andrew Jackson. After his military service, he became a farmer. However, white settlers began to move onto his land. In 1837, another treaty forced the Chickasaw people to move far away to what was called the Indian Territory. This area is now part of Oklahoma.

Sadly, Tishomingo died from smallpox during this difficult journey, which is known as the Trail of Tears. He is buried somewhere near Little Rock, Arkansas. His son, Iuka, is the reason the nearby town of Iuka is named.

The town of Tishomingo grew when the Illinois Central Railroad was built. Long ago, Andrew Jackson himself even camped at the spot where Tishomingo now stands, while on his way to visit the Creek nation.
