History
The first person to settle in the area that is now Troupsburg arrived in 1805.
The town was officially created on February 12, 1808. It was formed from parts of two other towns, Canisteo and Addison. At first, its name was spelled "Troupsburgh."
Robert Troup and the Pulteney Estate
The town is named after Colonel Robert Troup. He was an important person who fought in the American Revolution. Later, he became a judge and then worked as a land agent. A land agent manages large areas of land for someone else.
Colonel Troup worked for the Pulteney Estate. This was a huge piece of land in New York. It stretched from Sodus Bay on Lake Ontario all the way south to the Pennsylvania border. The Genesee River was its western edge, and Seneca Lake was its eastern edge. Robert Troup took over managing this land after the first agent had problems with money.
Changes to Town Borders
Over the years, the size of Troupsburg changed a few times. In 1818, more land was added to Troupsburg from Canisteo.
Later, Troupsburg gave up some of its land. This happened in 1827 to help create the towns of Greenwood and Jasper. In 1828, Troupsburg also contributed land to form the Town of Woodhull.
Geography
Troupsburg covers an area of about 61.3 square miles (158.68 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with only a tiny bit of water.
The southern border of the town is also the border with Pennsylvania. This means Troupsburg is right next to Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The town is known for being higher up in elevation compared to other towns in Steuben County.
New York State Route 36 is a main road that runs north and south through Troupsburg.
