Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia. It has sent athletes to the Summer Olympics seven times. Their first appearance was in 1996. Turkmenistan has never competed in the Winter Olympics. It is the only country from the former Soviet Union that has not been to the Winter Games. Turkmenistan is also the northernmost country never to have competed in the Winter Olympics.

Before 1996, Turkmen athletes competed with other countries. They were part of the Soviet Union team. In 1992, they competed as part of the Unified Team.

On July 27, 2021, Turkmenistan won its first Olympic medal. This happened at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Polina Guryeva won a silver medal in women's 59 kg weightlifting.

The capital city of Turkmenistan is Ashgabat. It has a special Olympic Park. This park hosted the Asian Indoor & Martial Arts games in 2017. Athletes from Australia and Oceania also joined these games. The park also hosted the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships.

The National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan was created in 1990. This committee helps Turkmen athletes prepare for the Olympics.

Turkmenistan's Olympic Journey

Turkmenistan has been part of the Summer Olympics since 1996. They have sent athletes to seven different Summer Games. Even though they have competed many times, they only recently won their first medal.

Other athletes from Turkmenistan have won medals too. These were when they competed for other teams. For example, Marat Nyýazow won a medal for the Soviet Union in 1960. Daniyar İsmayilov currently competes for Turkey and has also won a medal.

In 1992, Altymyrat Orazdurdyýew was part of the Unified Team. He was a great weightlifter. However, he was not allowed to compete at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

How Turkmenistan Has Performed

Turkmenistan has sent athletes to the Summer Olympics since 1996. For many years, they did not win any medals. They finally won their first medal in 2020. This was a big moment for the country.
