Tyler Lee Hoechlin (born September 11, 1987) is an American actor. He first became known for playing Michael Sullivan Jr. in the 2002 movie Road to Perdition. On TV, Tyler starred as Martin Brewer on 7th Heaven from 2003 to 2007. He also became famous for playing Derek Hale on Teen Wolf (2011–2014; 2017). Later, he played Superman in The CW's Supergirl (2016–2019) and Superman & Lois (2021–2024). He also voiced Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy VII Remake video game series.

About Tyler Hoechlin
His Early Life
Tyler Hoechlin was born in Corona, California, on September 11, 1987. His parents are Lori and Don Hoechlin. He has two brothers and an older sister. Tyler has said his family background includes Native American, German, and Irish roots. He finished high school at Santiago High School in 2006.
His Journey to Acting
Tyler started playing baseball when he was seven years old. He continued playing throughout high school. He even earned a baseball scholarship to Arizona State University. His team made it to the College World Series. In 2008, he moved to the University of California, Irvine. There, he played second baseman for the UC Irvine Anteaters.
At first, Tyler wanted to be a professional baseball player. He even turned down acting chances, like a meeting with director Francis Ford Coppola. He also said no to the role of Emmett Cullen in the Twilight movies. But during his third year of college, he hurt his leg. This made it harder for him to play baseball. So, he started going to more acting auditions. His coach even told him to focus on acting full-time.
Tyler's Acting Career
Starting as a Young Actor
When Tyler was a baby, he appeared in TV commercials. This led him to an acting school and an agent. His first role as an older child was at age 11. It was in Happy Haunting, a Disney Sing-Along Songs video.
When he was 13, Tyler was chosen from 2,000 people to play Michael Sullivan Jr. in Road to Perdition. He won several awards for this role. These included the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor. He also won the Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film – Leading Young Actor.
This role helped him get the part of Martin Brewer in the TV show 7th Heaven in 2003. He was first planned for only two episodes. But he became a regular character for the rest of the show.
Tyler was nominated for a 2004 Teen Choice Award for Breakout Male Star for 7th Heaven. He stayed on the show for four years. The show's producers worked around his baseball schedule. They filmed on days he didn't have practice or a game.
After 7th Heaven
After 7th Heaven ended in 2007, Tyler had small roles in other TV shows. These included CSI: Miami, My Boys, and Castle. He also returned to movies. He starred in Grizzly Rage in 2007 and appeared in Solstice in 2008. He was also in the 2011 movie Hall Pass.
Becoming a Werewolf in Teen Wolf
Tyler played the werewolf Derek Hale in the TV series Teen Wolf. He was a main character for the first four seasons. He came back as a guest star for the sixth and final season in 2017. While filming Teen Wolf in Atlanta, Georgia, Tyler lived with his co-stars Tyler Posey and Dylan O'Brien. The cast of Teen Wolf won the Best Ensemble award at the 2013 Young Hollywood Awards. Tyler also won the 2014 Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Male Scene Stealer.
Movies and Superman
After Teen Wolf, Tyler wanted to work on other movies. He was cast in Richard Linklater's baseball comedy Everybody Wants Some!!. To help the cast feel like a team, they lived together for three weeks. Tyler used his own baseball experience for the movie. He played the team captain, McReynolds. The movie was released in 2016 and was well-liked by critics.
In the same year, Tyler was in another baseball movie called Undrafted. He also appeared in the military thriller Stratton, which came out in 2017.
In 2016, Tyler was chosen to play Superman on the CW show Supergirl. The producer, Greg Berlanti, chose him without an audition. Tyler said playing Superman felt "surreal." He hoped to show the character's hope and optimism. He appeared in four episodes of the show's second season. He was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Guest Performance on a Television Series for his role. Fans and critics liked his Superman, calling it "fun" and "a breath of fresh air."
In 2018, Tyler returned as Superman for special crossover episodes with other shows like Arrow and The Flash. He also appeared in the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover episodes.
In October 2019, it was announced that a new show called Superman & Lois was being made. It would star Tyler and Elizabeth Tulloch. The show started on February 23, 2021. It was renewed for a third season in March 2022 and a fourth season in 2023.
Recent Projects
Tyler was cast in Fifty Shades Freed, which was released in 2018. In the same year, he appeared in The Domestics, a thriller about a world after a disaster.
Tyler starred in Bigger, where he played Joe Weider. This movie told the story of the Weider brothers, who started the International Federation of Bodybuilders. Bigger premiered in September 2018.
In 2019, Tyler appeared in the sci-fi drama series Another Life. He also starred in Can You Keep a Secret? as Jack Harper. This movie is based on a book by Sophie Kinsella. In 2020, he became the new voice of Sephiroth for the Final Fantasy VII Remake video game.
In May 2022, it was confirmed that Tyler would play Derek Hale again in Teen Wolf: The Movie. He also helped produce the movie.
