Tyler earned a scholarship to play baseball at Arizona State University. His team made it to the College World Series in Nebraska.
In 2008, after one year, he moved to the University of California, Irvine. There, he played second baseman for the UC Irvine Anteaters. Tyler really wanted to be a professional baseball player. He even turned down acting jobs, like a role in the Twilight movies.
But during his third year of college, he hurt his hamstring muscle. This made it hard for him to play baseball. So, he started going to more acting auditions. His coach even told him to focus on acting full-time.
Acting Roles
Tyler started acting very young. As a baby, he was in TV commercials. When he was 11, he got his first role in a Disney Sing-Along Songs video called Happy Haunting.
When he was 13, Tyler was chosen from 2,000 other young actors. He got the part of Michael Sullivan Jr. in the movie Road to Perdition. For this role, Tyler won two big awards: the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and the Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actor in a movie.
This role helped him get the part of Martin Brewer in the TV show 7th Heaven in 2003. He was supposed to be in only two episodes, but he became a regular character for the rest of the show. The show's producers even worked around his baseball schedule. They filmed on days he didn't have practice or games.
After 7th Heaven ended in 2007, Tyler had small roles in other TV shows. These included CSI: Miami, My Boys, and Castle. He also appeared in movies like Grizzly Rage (2007) and Solstice (2008). In 2011, he was in the movie Hall Pass.
Tyler played the werewolf Derek Hale in the TV series Teen Wolf. He was a main character for the first four seasons. He came back as a guest star for the sixth and final season in 2017. During the early seasons, Tyler lived with his co-stars Tyler Posey and Dylan O'Brien. The cast of Teen Wolf won the Best Ensemble award at the 2013 Young Hollywood Awards. Tyler also won the 2014 Teen Choice Award for Choice TV Male Scene Stealer.
After Teen Wolf, Tyler wanted to try other movie roles. He was cast in the baseball comedy Everybody Wants Some!!. Tyler used his own baseball experience for this movie, playing the team captain. He also appeared in the military thriller Stratton, released in 2017.
In 2016, Tyler was chosen to play Superman on the CW show Supergirl. The show's producer, Greg Berlanti, picked him without an audition. Tyler said playing Superman felt "surreal" (like a dream). He wanted to show Superman as a symbol of hope. He was in four episodes of the show's second season. Fans and critics really liked his Superman, calling him "fun" and "a breath of fresh air."
In 2018, Tyler returned as Superman for special crossover episodes with other superhero shows. These included Arrow and The Flash. He also appeared in the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover episodes.
In 2019, it was announced that a new show called Superman & Lois was being made. Tyler and Elizabeth Tulloch would star in it. The show started in 2021 and has been very popular.
