This picture shows where US-73 used to start in Kansas City, near I-435.

US 73 starts its journey in Kansas City, Kansas. At first, it shares its path with other highways. These include US 24, US 40, and K-7.

After about two miles, US 24 and US 40 turn west. But US 73 keeps going north with K-7. They travel together through a town called Lansing. In Lansing, they cross paths with K-5.

Next, US 73 and K-7 continue north through Leavenworth. From Leavenworth, the road turns towards the northwest. It meets K-192 near Easton.

When US 73 reaches Atchison, it turns west. This is where K-7 ends its shared journey with US 73. In Atchison, US 73 starts sharing its route with US 59. They travel west together.

Near Lancaster, at the intersection with K-9, US 73 turns northwest. It then goes through Huron. It also travels with K-20 near Everest.

US 73 then heads west into Horton. Here, it meets US 159. These two highways, US 73 and US 159, then travel north together. They meet US 36 in Hiawatha.

After passing through Reserve in a northwest direction, US 73 and US 159 turn north. This is where they leave Kansas and enter the state of Nebraska.
