Exploring the Viaur River's Journey
The Viaur river is about 168.2 km (104.5 mi) long. This is like traveling from one end of a big city to another! The area of land that drains water into the Viaur river is called its drainage basin. This basin covers about 1,559 km2 (602 sq mi).
How Much Water Flows in the Viaur River?
Scientists measure how much water flows through a river. This is called its discharge. They have been watching the Viaur river's flow since 1937 in a town called Laguépie. This town is close to where the Viaur joins the Aveyron river. On average, about 14.70 m3/s (519 cu ft/s) of water flows past Laguépie every second.

This chart shows how the amount of water in the Viaur changes throughout the year. You can see that more water flows in winter and spring, and less in summer.
Where the Viaur River Begins and Ends
The Viaur river starts high up on the side of a hill called Puech del Pal. This is in the commune (a small French town or village) of Vézins-de-Lévézou. It's in the Aveyron department, at an altitude of about 1,070 m (3,510 ft). That's pretty high up!
As it flows, the Viaur river passes through many towns and villages in different departments:
- In Aveyron: Bor-et-Bar, Pont-de-Salars, Ségur
- In Tarn: Pampelonne, Mirandol-Bourgnounac
- In Tarn-et-Garonne: Laguépie
The Viaur river flows through 30 different communes. Two of these towns are even named after the river: Sainte-Juliette-sur-Viaur and Saint-Just-sur-Viaur. Both are in the Aveyron department.
Finally, the Viaur river meets the Aveyron river. This happens in the commune of Laguépie, in the Tarn-et-Garonne department. At this point, the river is at an altitude of 155 m (509 ft).
Rivers That Join the Viaur
Many smaller rivers and streams flow into the Viaur. These are called tributaries. Here are some of the most important ones:
