Wake, Rattle, and Roll was a cool American TV show that mixed live actors with cartoons. It was made by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Four Point Entertainment. The show first aired in the fall of 1990. It was meant to be watched in the mornings before school. The show's name was inspired by the famous song "Shake, Rattle and Roll".
After its first season, the show moved to The Disney Channel in 1991. There, it was renamed Jump, Rattle, and Roll. This new name was because the show wasn't just shown in the mornings anymore. Jump, Rattle, and Roll was on The Disney Channel from October 7, 1991, until 1994. It was the only Hanna-Barbera cartoon series ever shown on that network! The show also aired in Australia and the animated parts were shown in the UK.
Contents
Adventures in the Basement
The show was all about a boy named Sam Baxter (played by R. J. Williams) and his awesome robot, D.E.C.K.S. (voiced by Rob Paulsen). D.E.C.K.S. was built from old video equipment! Sam and D.E.C.K.S. had many adventures in their basement. This basement had a special time machine that could bring famous people from history right into their home.
Sometimes, Sam and D.E.C.K.S. would even have "remote fights." They would each grab a remote control and press buttons. This would make them change into different characters, like Hanna-Barbera cartoon stars or famous movie actors!
Cool Basement Gadgets
Sam's grandpa, Dr. Lester T. Quirk (played by Avery Schreiber), was a super smart inventor. He always gave Sam and D.E.C.K.S. amazing sci-fi gadgets for their basement bedroom.
- People Processor: This was like a teleporter! It could send people anywhere in the world. Sometimes, it could even send them through time.
- Mondo-View: This was a super powerful computer. Sam used it for many things, like talking to Grandpa Quirk no matter where he was in the world.
- Debbie Detector: This was a video monitor that Sam and D.E.C.K.S. used to talk to Sam's older sister, Debbie (played by Terri Ivens). It helped keep Debbie from spending too much time in the basement. It even made an alarm sound when she was getting close!
Awesome Cartoon Segments
After a short live-action part with Sam and D.E.C.K.S., the robot would turn on the TV screen on his chest. Then, an animated cartoon would play! There were two brand new Hanna-Barbera cartoon series made just for this show.
Monster Tails
Monster Tails was about a group of unique pets. They lived in a spooky castle in Transylvania with their guardian, Igor Jr. (voiced by Charlie Adler). Igor Jr. was the son of the famous Igor! Each pet was a lot like their monster owners, who were away in Hollywood making movies.
- Frankenmutt (voiced by Frank Welker): This was the Frankenstein Monster's dog. He was super strong and could even play the organ. He literally had the brain of a genius!
- Elsa (voiced by Pat Musick): She was the Bride of Frankenstein's dog. Elsa had the brain of a parrot and had a big crush on Frankenmutt.
- Catula (voiced by Charlie Adler): This was Count Dracula's cat. Catula was a bit full of himself, but he was great at magic and changing into other things.
- Mumphrey (voiced by Frank Welker): The Mummy's dog. Mumphrey was always tired and had trouble sleeping.
- Dr. Veenie (voiced by Jonathan Winters): Dr. Jekyll's dog. He was a brilliant scientist. But whenever he sneezed, he turned into the super-strong and wild Mr. Snyde! Mr. Snyde was like Dr. Veenie's evil twin.
- Angel (voiced by Pat Musick): The Creature from the Black Lagoon's goldfish. Angel was a ghost because she was eaten by a shark! She often shouted loudly.
Monster Tails was also shown in the U.K. on a show called The Big Breakfast in 1993.
Monster Tails Episodes
Here are a few examples of the Monster Tails adventures:
- "Elsa Dearest": Elsa becomes evil and obsessed with cleaning after taking a special formula!
- "Sleepwalk, Don't Run": Mumphrey sleepwalks and causes all sorts of trouble for his monster friends.
- "To Leech His Own": Catula tries to get rid of a leech that keeps drinking his tomato juice.
Fender Bender 500
This cartoon was a modern version of the classic Wacky Races from the 1990s. In this show, classic Hanna-Barbera characters drove cool monster trucks in races! Each truck looked special and matched its drivers. For example, Yogi and Boo Boo's truck looked like a giant picnic basket on wheels.
Shadoe Stevens, a famous announcer, was the voice of the race announcer. Just like in Wacky Races, Dick Dastardly and Muttley were the cheaters. They had a new vehicle called the Dirty Truckster. This cartoon was the fourth all-star sports show from Hanna-Barbera.
Race Competitors
Here are some of the famous characters who raced:
- Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy in the Lucky Trucky (#7)
- Dick Dastardly & Muttley in the Dirty Truckster (#00)
- Huckleberry Hound & Snagglepuss in the Half Dog, Half Cat, Half Track (#2)
- Yogi and Boo-Boo Bear in the Jellystone Jammer (#1)
- Winsome Witch and her cat Lucky in the Sonic Broom (#13)
