History of Westlake
The area that is now Westlake was first settled in 1847. Charles and Matilda Medlin, along with about 20 other families, made their homes here. In the middle of the 1900s, this land was known as Circle T Ranch. It was a large 2,000-acre ranch started by a Dallas lawyer and oilman named J. Glenn Turner.
When the town officially became a town in the late 1950s, the name Southlake, Texas was already taken. So, the ranchers and homeowners decided to call their new town Westlake.
In the late 1990s, the town's leaders considered breaking up the town. Some parts of Westlake were going to join nearby towns like Southlake and Fort Worth, Texas. However, a local judge decided that these changes were against the law. Because of this, the land stayed under Westlake's control.
Westlake does not have its own police department. Instead, the town gets its law enforcement services from the city of Keller. Keller provides police officers to patrol Westlake and help with traffic. However, Westlake does have its own Fire-EMS services, which means they have their own firefighters and emergency medical teams.
