Winnie-the-Pooh: The Best Bear in All the World is an exciting book that continues the adventures of Winnie-the-Pooh. It's the second official follow-up to the classic stories by A. A. Milne. This book came out on October 6, 2016. It celebrated 90 years since the very first Winnie-the-Pooh book was published!
This special book is a collection of four brand-new short stories. Each story was written by a different famous children's author. These authors are Paul Bright, Jeanne Willis, Kate Saunders, and Brian Sibley. The pictures in the book look just like the original drawings by E. H. Shepard. They were created by Mark Burgess. This book became quite famous because it introduced a brand-new character: Penguin!
Contents
Adventures Through the Seasons
This book takes you through the four seasons in the magical Hundred Acre Wood. Each story focuses on a different time of year.
Autumn Adventures
The book starts with "Autumn" by Paul Bright. Christopher Robin is very excited to be in the village play. He's playing St George! But his talk about a scary dragon makes Pooh and Piglet feel a bit worried. Meanwhile, Eeyore is carefully guarding something he found. Is it old or new? The friends have many questions. But Christopher Robin has asked not to be bothered. What will they do?
Winter Wonders
Next, "Winter" by Brian Sibley introduces a new friend: Penguin! Christopher Robin thinks Penguin needs to become more outgoing. But will Penguin stay long enough for everyone to get to know him? You'll have to read to find out!
Spring Surprises
In "Spring" by Jeanne Willis, the birds are building their nests. Winnie-the-Pooh is enjoying the beautiful daffodils and humming a happy tune. Then he meets Eeyore, who is feeling sad. Eeyore thinks another donkey is trying to steal his favorite thistles. Pooh decides to find this other donkey. Piglet agrees to help, as long as the other donkey isn't a scary Heffalump!
Summer Journeys
Finally, "Summer" by Kate Saunders brings new discoveries. Christopher Robin tells Winnie-the-Pooh all about the "Sauce of the Nile." This makes Pooh wonder if the river in the Hundred Acre Wood also has its own "sauce." So, Pooh sets off with Piglet, Rabbit, Tigger, and their other friends to explore and find out!
Meet the New Character: Penguin
Just before the book was released, everyone learned that a new character would join the Hundred Acre Wood. This new friend was Penguin!
The Guardian newspaper reported how author Brian Sibley got the idea for Penguin. He saw an old photo of A. A. Milne's son, Christopher (the real Christopher Robin), playing with a toy penguin. Sibley explained that he wanted to add a new character. He also wanted to keep the story's feeling and writing style the same as the original books. He thought a penguin meeting Pooh wasn't stranger than a kangaroo or a tiger in a Sussex wood. So, he imagined what would happen if Penguin found his way to Pooh Corner on a snowy day.
The Stylist magazine shared that Penguin is the first new character approved by the Milne family. The Independent newspaper mentioned that the original toy penguin might have been bought at Harrods department store. Sebastian Wormell, an expert from Harrods, said that in the early 1900s, toy penguins were very popular. This was because people were fascinated by Antarctic explorers like Shackleton and Scott. He believes the toy in the photo could be "Squeak." This toy was in their 1922 catalog and came from a popular cartoon called Pip, Squeak and Wilfred.
Other Pooh Adventures
The Best Bear in All the World is the second official follow-up to A. A. Milne's original stories.
The first official sequel was Return to the Hundred Acre Wood. It was written by David Benedictus and also had pictures by Mark Burgess. This book also introduced a new character: Lottie the Otter.
Another special adventure for Pooh's 90th birthday was Winnie-the-Pooh Meets the Queen. In this story, Pooh visits Buckingham Palace to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's 90th birthday!
