Exploring Wyoming's Past

How Wyoming Village Began

The village was first settled in 1809 by a person named Silas Newell. It was originally called Newell's Settlement. Later, in 1829, its name was changed to Wyoming. The village officially became a village in 1875. The name "Wyoming" comes from a Lenape word that means "broad bottom lands."

The Story of Gaslight Village

Wyoming was one of the first places where natural gas was found and used. Even though it was never a huge gas producer, the gas still helps power the village's streetlights and some homes today. Because of this, the historic downtown area is known as the "Gaslight Village."

Historic Buildings and Places

Middlebury Academy: A Place of Learning

The Middlebury Academy was built in 1817. It was officially recognized by the New York Regents in 1819. Many people believe it was the first school for higher education west of the Genesee River in New York. This historic building is still in downtown Wyoming. The Middlebury Historical Society takes care of it as a museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Other Important Historic Sites

Other places in Wyoming that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the Bryant Fleming House and the Wyoming Village Historic District. These places help tell the story of the village's past.

Hillside Inn: A Historic Retreat

Another important historic spot is the Hillside Inn. This beautiful Greek Revival style mansion was built in 1851 by Dr. Pliny Hayes. It was originally a "Water Cure" establishment, a type of spa where people went for health treatments using water. The inn overlooks the village of Wyoming. It used to be a bed and breakfast until 2012. Many famous people have visited the Hillside Inn, including Susan B. Anthony, John Muir, and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
