The Story of Yoshi's Jazz Club
Yoshi's started as a Japanese restaurant in Berkeley. It was created by Yoshie Akiba and her friends Kaz Kajimura and Hiroyuki Hori. Yoshie Akiba came to the United States to study dance and art.
The club soon moved to a larger building on Claremont Avenue. This is when it began to feature live jazz music. Over time, Yoshi's became known as one of the most important jazz clubs on the West Coast.
In May 1997, the club moved to Jack London Square. This move was part of a plan to make the Port of Oakland area more lively. The new Yoshi's was a large jazz concert hall. It had 330 seats for guests. It also had a separate Japanese restaurant with 220 seats. The Oakland Development Agency helped with money for this big move.
Yoshi's in San Francisco
On November 28, 2007, Yoshi's opened a second location. This new club was in San Francisco's Fillmore District. It was a very large space. The city hoped this new club would help bring back the area's history of jazz and culture.
The famous drummer Roy Haynes performed on the opening night of the San Francisco location. However, Yoshi's San Francisco was sold in 2014. Its name changed to The Addition. A few months later, it closed completely.
