Zé Maria played as a defender, usually on the right side of the field. He is especially well-known for his long career with the Corinthians club and the Brazilian national team.

Playing for Brazil
Zé Maria also played for the Brazilian national team. He represented his country in 46 games between 1968 and 1978.
He was part of the Brazilian team that won the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. Even though he was a reserve and didn't play in that tournament, he was still a champion! He later played in four matches during the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
