Big Events of 1257
New Schools and Learning
- A famous school called the Collège de Sorbonne was started in Paris, France, by Robert de Sorbon. This college became a key part of the already existing University of Paris, which is still famous today.
- In England, a well-known historian named Matthew Paris spent a whole week talking with King Henry III of England. Matthew Paris was gathering information for his big history book about England, called Chronica Majora.
- The Aberdeen Grammar School also opened its doors in 1257.
Money and Wars
- King Henry III of England tried something new with money. He ordered the creation of a special coin made of pure gold. This was the first time a high-value gold coin was made in England. However, people soon realized that the gold in the coin was worth more than the coin's face value. This meant people would melt the coins down for the gold, so they didn't stay in circulation for long.
- A conflict known as the War of Saint Sabas began in a region called Outremer. This was the second war between two powerful Italian cities, Genoa and Venice.
Changes in Cities and Empires
- The city of Kraków in Poland was rebuilt by Boleslaus V of Poland. The city had been almost completely destroyed during the Tatar invasions in 1241.
- In Asia, the Mongols took control of Annam, which is now northern Vietnam. This was part of their large expansion across the continent.
- In Japan, the Kōgen era came to an end, and the Shōka era officially began.
