The Story of 5566
Before They Became 5566
Each member of 5566 had some success before they joined to form the band.
Tony Sun had released his own music albums in the 1990s. These albums were in the Taiwanese dialect and were very popular. People even called him the "Taiwanese little champion."
Zax Wang was a member of another group called POSTM3N.
Sam Wang was a national soccer player. He also worked as a model. As mentioned, he is also part of the boy band 183 Club.
Jason Hsu was not very popular in high school at first. But after he lost weight, he started appearing in several TV commercials.
How 5566 Became Famous
In 2002, 5566 made their first appearance. They quickly became very popular. In their first interview, they showed off their many talents. At first, some people were critical of them.
Their first TV series was called My MVP Valentine. It aired on local television. The band members played the main roles in the show. The show was a big hit and had very high viewership. This drama helped 5566 become famous. It also helped start the careers of other stars like Angela Zhang and Johnny Yan.
During this time, Rio Peng got a serious injury while filming a variety show. He had to take a break from group activities to get better. Even though the other members said he was still part of the group, Rio Peng later left. He went on to start his own management company.
In December of the same year, 5566 released their first album. It sold 240,000 copies in Taiwan. The band became known for releasing their albums in different versions. This is still true today for most of their albums. Only two albums, Westside Story OST and Top of the Forbidden City OST, have not been re-released in multiple versions.
