Ajay-Atul is a famous Indian music duo made up of brothers Ajay Ashok Gogavale and Atul Ashok Gogavale. They are well-known for creating music for Indian movies, especially in Marathi and Hindi languages. They have won many important awards, including a National Film Award, four Filmfare Awards Marathi, and several Mirchi Music Awards. They even appeared on the Forbes India Celebrity 100 List, showing how popular and successful they are.

Ajay-Atul started their journey with a religious music album called Vishwa Vinayak. It mixed traditional Ganpati mantras with symphonic music. Over the years, they have worked on many popular films. Some of their most famous works include Natarang, Sairat, Agneepath, Dhadak, and Tumbbad. Their music often uses real instruments and blends traditional Indian sounds with modern styles. Recently, their songs for Marathi films like Chandramukhi and Ved have also been very successful.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Ajay and Atul were born to Ashok Gogavale in Pune. Their father worked for the government, so they moved around a lot. They grew up in different villages in western Maharashtra, like Rajgurunagar and Junnar. Atul, the older brother, was born on September 11, 1974. Ajay, the younger brother, was born on August 21, 1976.

The brothers were not very interested in school studies. However, they loved music from a young age. They started trying out different musical ideas even when they were still in school. Once, in a competition, Ajay changed an old song and they won a prize. This made them realize they had a special talent for music.

Their family did not have a musical background. They also could not afford to buy musical instruments. So, Ajay and Atul learned music by playing at school events, temples, and with local bands. They would even make friends with people who owned instruments like harmoniums and drums so they could practice. Later, in college, they started working as music arrangers for local bands. Their mother convinced their father to buy them a keyboard. This gift helped them explore music even more. Their father told them, "You haven't been given any toys during childhood, now this is your toy." This encouraged them to keep experimenting with music.

Journey as Music Composers

Starting with Devotional Music

In the early days, Ajay and Atul created a religious album called Vishwa Vinayak. They felt that devotional music at the time sounded too much like film songs. They wanted to make something special and respectful for Lord Ganesh. So, they decided to mix traditional prayers and chants with symphonic music. They were inspired by famous Western composers like Bach and Beethoven.

They spent about a year and a half working on the album. They made sure the religious chants were correct and sounded good. Even though they were excited, Vishwa Vinayak did not become an instant hit. For the next two and a half years, they found it hard to get more music work. But they now see this time as a period of learning and getting ready for bigger things.

Breakthrough in Films

Their luck changed when someone from Baroda called them. This person loved Vishwa Vinayak and went out of their way to find Ajay-Atul. Soon, more people started noticing their work. Filmmakers began to approach them. Famous director Ram Gopal Varma asked them to work on his film Gayab. Later, Mahesh Manjrekar and Amitabh Bachchan worked with them on Viruddh.

They also started getting projects in Marathi cinema. Films like Savarkhed Ek Gaon, Aga Bai Arrecha! and Jatra helped them become known. Ajay-Atul believe Vishwa Vinayak was the key to their success. They also composed music for many TV commercials and ballets to improve their skills.

Famous Songs and Film Projects

Some of their most famous songs include Man Udhān Vāryāche, Malhāravārī, and Kombdī Paḷalī. In 2010, they composed all the songs and background music for the Marathi film Naṭarang. Their music for Naṭarang used traditional Marathi folk styles like Lavani and Tamāśā.

They also made music for big Hindi films. They worked on Singham and Bol Bachchan with director Rohit Shetty. They also composed for Agneepath and Brothers, produced by Karan Johar. They even contributed music to Aamir Khan's film PK.

In 2016, they worked on Nagraj Manjule's film Sairat. This film became the first Marathi movie to earn over 1 billion rupees! They also composed for its remakes, Manasu Mallige (in Kannada) and Dhadak (in Hindi). They produced the Marathi film Jaundya Na Balasaheb. They continued to create music for films like Tumbbad, Thugs of Hindostan, Mauli, and Zero. Their song "Mere Naam Tu" from Zero got 18 million views on YouTube in just 24 hours.

Ajay-Atul were named 'Composer of the Decade' at the Mirchi Music Awards in 2021 for their work on Agneepath and Sairat. Many of their songs and albums are recorded using real instruments, which gives them a unique sound.

Recent Work

They continue to compose music for many Hindi and Marathi films. In Bollywood, they worked on Super 30, Panipat, and songs for Tanhaji, Jhund, and Ram Setu. In 2022, they created very popular songs for the Marathi films Chandramukhi and Ved. Their music for Chandramukhi won them many awards. Songs like "Sukh Kalale" and "Ved Lavlay" from Ved also became huge hits.
