Alexander Mark David Oxlade-Chamberlain (born 15 August 1993) is an English professional footballer. He plays as a midfielder for Süper Lig club Beşiktaş. He also played for the England national team from 2012 to 2019, making 35 appearances.
He became well-known playing for Southampton at age 17 during the 2010–11 season. In August 2011, he joined Arsenal. He quickly made history by becoming the youngest English player to score in the UEFA Champions League. At Arsenal, he played 198 games, scored 20 goals, and won the FA Cup three times.
In August 2017, Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Liverpool. There, he helped the team win the Champions League in 2019 and the 2019–20 Premier League title in 2020. He made his debut for the England national team in May 2012. He was even called up for UEFA Euro 2012 and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Early Life and Family
Alexander Oxlade-Chamberlain was born on 15 August 1993 in Portsmouth, England. His father, Mark Chamberlain, was also a famous footballer who played for clubs like Stoke City and Portsmouth, and for England. His uncle, Neville Chamberlain, and younger brother, Christian, are also professional footballers. Alex has Jamaican roots through his grandparents.
He went to St John's College in Portsmouth. Growing up, he was a fan of Arsenal. Alex was a talented athlete and played other sports too. He played rugby union and almost chose it over football when he got a trial with London Irish. He was also a good cricket player, trying out as a wicketkeeper and batsman for Hampshire. However, he decided to focus on football.
In his personal life, Alex started dating singer Perrie Edwards from the group Little Mix in February 2017. They had their first child, a son, in August 2021 and got engaged in June 2022.
Football Journey
Starting at Southampton
Alex joined the Southampton Academy when he was just seven years old. He made his first team debut for Southampton on 2 March 2010. He was only 16 years and 199 days old, making him the club's second youngest player ever, after Theo Walcott.
In August 2010, after turning 17, Alex signed his first professional contract. He scored his first senior goal in a League Cup match against AFC Bournemouth. His first league goal came in October 2010 against Oldham Athletic. He ended the season with nine goals. Southampton was promoted to the Championship, and Alex was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year.
Moving to Arsenal

On 8 August 2011, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Premier League club Arsenal. The transfer fee was reported to be around £12 million. He made his Arsenal debut on 28 August 2011 against Manchester United.
Just a month later, on 20 September 2011, he scored his first goal for Arsenal in a League Cup match. On 28 September 2011, he scored on his UEFA Champions League debut against Olympiacos. This made him the youngest English player to score in the Champions League at the time.
Alex quickly became a key player for Arsenal. He scored his first two Premier League goals in a 7–1 win against Blackburn Rovers in February 2012. At the end of his first season, he was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Continuing at Arsenal
In December 2012, Alex signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal. He continued to score important goals, including one against Newcastle United in a 7–3 win.
During the 2013–14 season, he suffered an injury that kept him out for a few months. However, he returned to score two goals against Crystal Palace. He also helped Arsenal win the 2014 FA Community Shield against Manchester City in 2014.
He scored in the North London derby against Tottenham in September 2014. He also scored in the Champions League against RSC Anderlecht and Monaco. In May 2015, he helped Arsenal win the 2015 FA Cup final by setting up a goal.
In August 2015, Alex scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Chelsea in the Community Shield. He faced a serious knee injury in February 2016 during a Champions League match against Barcelona. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season and meant he missed the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.
He returned for the 2016–17 season, scoring against Liverpool and West Ham United. He also played a new role as a wing-back and was named Man of the Match in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City.
Joining Liverpool
On 31 August 2017, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed a five-year contract with Liverpool for £35 million. He made his debut for Liverpool in a 5–0 loss to Manchester City. He scored his first goal for the club on 17 October in a huge 7–0 Champions League win against Maribor. This was a record-breaking away win for an English club.
He scored his first league goal for Liverpool in November 2017 against West Ham. In January 2018, he scored the first goal in Liverpool's 4–3 victory over Manchester City, ending their unbeaten run. However, on 25 April 2018, he suffered a serious knee injury during a Champions League semi-final match against Roma. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season and meant he missed the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Recovery and Success at Liverpool
Liverpool announced that Alex would miss most of the 2018–19 season due to his injury. However, he worked hard on his recovery and returned to play on 26 April 2019, 366 days after his injury. He was an unused substitute when Liverpool won the Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
In August 2019, Alex signed a new contract with Liverpool. He scored three Champions League goals in two weeks against Genk. He also scored a great long-range goal against his former club Arsenal in the League Cup. He helped Liverpool win the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup in December 2019.
He continued to play for Liverpool until May 2023, when his contract ended. He scored his first goal of the 2020–21 season in a 3–0 win against Burnley.
Moving to Beşiktaş
On 14 August 2023, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined Süper Lig club Beşiktaş in Turkey on a three-year contract. Unfortunately, he suffered another injury in December 2023, tearing a muscle in his thigh. He was expected to be out for four months.
International Career
Youth Teams
Alex played for England's youth teams. He was called up to the England under-18 squad in November 2010. He then moved up to the England Under-19 squad and quickly to the England under-21 team in February 2011.
For the Under-21s, he made his first start in September 2011, providing two assists. He also had three assists in a comeback victory against Israel. A month later, he scored a hat-trick against Iceland.
Senior England Team
On 16 May 2012, Alex was chosen for the 23-man senior England squad for UEFA Euro 2012. He made his debut for the senior team on 26 May 2012 in a friendly match against Norway. He started his first senior match for England on 2 June against Belgium. On 11 June, he made his major international tournament debut, starting in England's opening Euro 2012 match against France.
He scored his first senior international goal on 12 October 2012 in a 5–0 victory over San Marino. He scored again against San Marino in March 2013. On 2 June 2013, he scored against Brazil in the opening of the refurbished Maracanã Stadium.
Unfortunately, due to injury, he was not included in the England squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
