During May 27–30, 2020, many fires were started in Minneapolis–Saint Paul as part of the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis–Saint Paul. These fires were caused by people setting flammable things on fire inside or near buildings. Sometimes, people even used Molotov cocktails.
The fires damaged buildings with flames, heat, and smoke. Water from fire hoses and fire sprinkler systems also caused damage. Many buildings were badly hurt or completely destroyed. Some even turned into piles of rubble.
These fires happened after George Floyd died on May 25, 2020. The cities of Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Apple Valley in Minnesota were affected. Most fires targeted businesses. But schools, non-profit groups, government offices, and homes were also hit.
One of the most famous fires was at the Minneapolis Police Department's third police station. Protesters took over the building and set it on fire on May 28. Sadly, that same night, Oscar Lee Stewart Jr. died from smoke and burn injuries. He was trapped inside a pawn shop that had been set on fire. The fires also forced many people to leave their homes and apartments.
After the unrest calmed down, it was hard for authorities to find out who caused all the damage. By May 2021, only 17 people had faced charges for fires at 11 properties. This was despite nearly 200 properties being affected. Many business owners had to pay for damages themselves. More than half of the losses were not covered by insurance. Some owners used online fundraising like GoFundMe or got grants to rebuild. But many others decided not to rebuild because they didn't have enough money or it was too risky.
What Caused the Fires?
The fires in Minneapolis–Saint Paul happened during a time of big public unrest. This followed the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. George Floyd was a Black man. He died while being arrested by Derek Chauvin, a White police officer.
A video of Floyd's death was shared widely. This caused a lot of anger and led to the George Floyd protests. These protests became a worldwide Black Lives Matter movement. People protested against structural racism and police brutality. Most protests were peaceful. However, some demonstrations in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and nearby areas turned into widespread unrest. This happened in the five days after Floyd's death.
Nearly 1,500 places in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area were damaged during the unrest. This included damage from fires, stealing, broken windows, graffiti, and other acts. The total cost was about $500 million. This made it the second most damaging unrest in U.S. history, after the 1992 Los Angeles riots. About 60% of the money lost in Minneapolis–Saint Paul was not covered by insurance.
Where Did the Fires Happen?
Fires caused damage in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Apple Valley. This happened between May 27 and May 30, 2020. Different reports gave different numbers for how many places were damaged. This is because some fires affected many businesses or buildings close to each other. The FBI and ATF tracked 164 building fires caused by arson. This number counted buildings, not every single fire.
News reporters also made lists of damaged properties. In Minneapolis, the city kept a record of damaged land. But it didn't always count buildings with many uses or multiple businesses. In Saint Paul, the Saint Paul Fire Department responded to 55 fires. Not all of these were to buildings.
Most places hit by fire were businesses. But the impact went beyond stores. Fires damaged buildings that housed schools, non-profit groups, government services, and homes. Many places owned by minority groups and immigrants were damaged. Several national chain stores were also affected. In Minneapolis, 35 families had to leave their homes because of fires.
Some business owners put up signs saying their place was Black-owned or minority-owned. This was to try and stop damage, but it didn't always work. Some people living in apartments above stores put up signs saying people lived there. This was to try and prevent fires. After the unrest, officials thought it could take 10 years to rebuild the damaged areas.
This list shows places damaged by fires during the George Floyd protests. These fires happened in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area of Minnesota. Only places reported in reliable sources as being damaged by fire between May 25 and May 30, 2020, are included. This list does not include things like cars, bus stops, trees, or piles of objects set on fire in the street. It also doesn't include fires from later events.
