Ava is a small town in Oneida County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 680 people lived there. Ava is located in the north-central part of Oneida County, just north of the city of Rome.

History of Ava

Ava became a town on May 12, 1846. It was created from a part of Boonville. Ava was one of the last towns to be formed in Oneida County. Only Forestport was created later, in 1869.

Early Settlers in Ava

The first person to settle in Ava was Ebenezer Harger in 1798. He had moved from Connecticut to Whitestown two years before. Other early settlers included Zephaniah and Abner Wood. Isaac Knight arrived from Rhode Island around 1798 or 1799.

Around 1800, more families came to Ava. These included Philo Harger, Benjamin Jones, and Salmon Bates. Salmon Bates opened the town's first tavern in his house. Daniel Buck, who fought in the American Revolutionary War, also arrived in 1800.

The first child born in Ava was Chauncey Harger in March 1801. The first saw-mill was built in 1801 by Philo Harger and Benjamin Jones.

Land in Ava

The land that makes up Ava came from several large land grants. These grants were given out in the late 1700s. Some of the important land grants included:

  • The Adgate Patent: This was a large area of 45,000 acres.
  • The Oothoudt Patent: This patent was for 16,052 acres. About half of Ava is on this land.
  • The Gore Patent: This patent was for 15,360 acres.
  • The Scriba Patent: This huge area of land was first bought by John and Nicholas Roosevelt. It later became part of the Scriba Patent.
  • The Franklin and Robinson Tract: This was a 75,000-acre piece of land.
  • The Muller Tract: This was a smaller part of the Franklin and Robinson Tract.

How Ava's Government Started

Ava officially became a town on May 12, 1846. The first town meeting was held soon after, on May 26, 1846. At this meeting, people chose leaders for the town. They picked a Town Supervisor and a Town Clerk. They also chose Justices of the Peace, Assessors, and other important roles. These roles helped the town run smoothly.

How Ava Got Its Name

The town of Ava was named after the Kingdom of Ava. This was a historical kingdom in Southeast Asia.

Businesses in Early Ava

An old road called the "French Road" passed through Ava. This road connected Fort Stanwix to Carthage. Carthage used to be a French settlement.

In 1848, a special road called a plank road was built. It connected Rome and Turin through Ava. This road was made of wooden planks. However, it was no longer used after 1855.

At first, Ava was mostly a farming area. Later, in the second half of the 1800s, it became more focused on dairy farming. There were six cheese factories in Ava at that time.

The Ava Town Hall is an important building in the town. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it is recognized as a special historical place.

Geography of Ava

Ava is located in the Tug Hill Plateau region of New York. The northern border of the town is also the border of Lewis County.
