BBC Breakfast is a popular BBC television show. It's a breakfast news programme that helps people start their day. The show is made by BBC News and you can watch it on BBC One and the BBC News channel. It's broadcast live every day. The show used to be in London, but in 2012, it moved to MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester. BBC Breakfast shares a mix of news, sports, weather, business, and other interesting stories.

How Did BBC Breakfast Start?

Before BBC Breakfast, there was a show called Breakfast Time. It was the very first BBC breakfast show. It started on 17 January 1983. The idea was to create a relaxed, informal show. The set looked like a living room with comfy sofas. The presenters even wore jumpers instead of suits!

From Relaxed to Newsy

Over time, the show became more focused on news. In 1986, it got a news desk and presenters started wearing suits. The broadcast time also changed.

In 1989, the programme was renamed BBC Breakfast News. It became even more serious and looked like a traditional news bulletin. The show started earlier, at 6:30 am.

New Look and Location Changes

In 1993, Breakfast News moved to a new studio. It used new computer-generated backgrounds. The business news section also became longer. In 1997, the show was simply called Breakfast News again.

The Story of BBC Breakfast

On 2 October 2000, Breakfast officially began. It combined the separate breakfast shows from BBC One and BBC News 24. This created one big show for both channels. The first hosts were Sophie Raworth and Jeremy Bowen.

Studio Updates and Channel Changes

In 2003, the studio got a fresh new look. From 2006, the BBC News channel started its own programming earlier. But Breakfast continued on BBC One until 9:15 am. In 2008, BBC News 24 was renamed "BBC News" as part of a big update.

On 2 May 2006, Breakfast moved to a larger studio. This new studio had big video screens. These screens could show different backgrounds and graphics.

Moving to Salford

In July 2010, the BBC announced a big move. Breakfast would move to new studios in Salford Quays. This meant some presenters decided not to move. The first Breakfast show from Salford was on 10 April 2012. Even though some people worried, the show kept its large audience.

Special Broadcasts and Presenter Changes

BBC Breakfast often broadcasts from special locations. For example, during the 2012 Summer Olympics, the show temporarily moved to a studio near the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford.

Over the years, several main presenters have joined and left the show.

  • In 2014, Susanna Reid left and Naga Munchetty became a regular presenter.
  • In 2016, Bill Turnbull left and Dan Walker took his place.
  • In 2021, Louise Minchin left after 20 years. Sally Nugent then became a main presenter.
  • In 2022, Dan Walker left. Jon Kay permanently replaced him.

On 26 May 2022, the BBC announced that Breakfast would get a brand new studio and look. This was part of a bigger update for all BBC News programmes.
