Working at BBC News

From 2005 to December 2007, Kate Silverton was a presenter on BBC News 24. She also often filled in as a presenter for BBC Breakfast.

In December 2007, she became the presenter of the BBC News 8 p.m. summary. This was a short 90-second news update shown on BBC One. She presented it for two months. From February to August 2008, she presented the BBC News at One. This was while the main presenter, Sophie Raworth, was on maternity leave.

In August 2010, BBC Scotland apologized to viewers. This happened after Kate said a word she shouldn't have at the end of a live news bulletin. Only viewers in Scotland heard it. A BBC Scotland spokesperson said Kate thought she was off-air at the time.

Kate took maternity leave in October 2011. She returned to the News at One in April 2012. Until May 2012, she was the deputy presenter of the BBC News at One. She presented on Mondays and when Sophie Raworth was not available. Kate returned to this deputy role in October 2013 to cover for Sian Williams' leave.

Becoming a Child Therapist

In 2021, Kate Silverton left the BBC. She wanted to follow what she called her "life's passion" and become a qualified child therapist. She told the PA news agency that her background in child psychology and becoming a mom inspired her. She said her journey had been decades long, learning about children's mental health. She also benefited from advice from many amazing people.

Kate shared that when she competed in Strictly Come Dancing in 2018, she already planned to leave journalism. Her goal was to train in child therapy. As of 2023, she is a qualified children's counsellor. She now works in a primary school, helping young children with special needs.

Personal Life

Kate Silverton married Mike Heron, a former Royal Marine, on December 18, 2010. On November 5, 2011, Kate gave birth to their baby girl. She had been told it might be hard to get pregnant naturally. This was because she lost an ovary during an operation at age 29. After four unsuccessful cycles of IVF (a fertility treatment), her baby daughter was conceived naturally.

After experiencing two miscarriages, Kate announced on January 25, 2014, that she was pregnant with her second child. She was 43 years old at the time. She shared the news on her Twitter account, saying her daughter Clemency was going to be a big sister. Their second child, a son, was born on June 26, 2014.

Kate Silverton is 5 feet 11 inches (1.80 m) tall. In August 2018, she mentioned that the producers of Strictly Come Dancing had to make special shoes for her. This was because none in the wardrobe were big enough for her size-nine feet.

Kate Silverton lives in the Cotswolds. She moved there from west London in early 2024.
