Barbacoas is a town and municipality in the Nariño Department of Colombia. It is located very close to sea level, at an altitude of just 36 meters (about 118 feet). This town shares its borders with several other places. To the north, it borders Magüí Payán. To the east, it borders Magüí Payán, Cumbitara, Los Andes, La Llanada, Samaniego, and Ricaurte. To the south, it borders Ricaurte and the country of Ecuador. Finally, to the west, it borders Tumaco and Roberto Payán.

History of Barbacoas
Before the Spanish arrived, the area of Barbacoas was home to several native tribes. These included the Barbacoa, Telembí, and Iscuande tribes. Even back then, this town was a very important place for finding gold. The native people used this gold for many things.
Modern Barbacoas was officially started on April 6, 1600. It was founded by a person named Francisco de Praga y Zuniga.
What Barbacoas Produces
Barbacoas is a very important town for mining in the Nariño region. It produces valuable metals like gold, silver, and platinum. It also has coal.
Besides mining, farming is another big part of the economy. Farmers here grow many different crops. These include rice, avocadoes, and plantains. They also grow sugarcane and various fruits. Some of the fruits are bananas and citrus fruits. Other interesting fruits grown are ciruelo, guayaba, papaya, and pineapples. You can also find guanábana, borojó, guayabilla, lulo, anón, guaba, maracuyá, guayaba brasilera, zapallo, and coconut.
Farmers also grow cacao, which is used to make chocolate. Other farm products include arracacha, camote, ñame, achiote, chillangua, tomatoes, peppers, palmito, chillarán, and oregano.

Barbacoas has a tropical rainforest climate. This means it is warm all year round and gets a lot of rain. It rains very heavily throughout the entire year.
