Barrington Hills is a village located about 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Chicago in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2020, about 4,114 people lived there. The village covers about 29 square miles (75 km2) across four different counties: Cook, Kane, Lake, and McHenry. Barrington Hills became an official village in 1957.

This suburban village is part of the larger Barrington area. Many wealthy residents have large homes and travel to downtown Chicago for work. Since 1963, new homes must be built on at least 5 acres (2.0 ha) of land. This rule helps keep the area open and rural. Horse farms have been a part of this area for many decades, even before the village was formed. Farming and raising horses are common activities here.

Barrington Hills is home to large farms and estates. One example is Hill 'N Dale Farms, which used to belong to Richard L. Duchossois, who owned the Arlington Park racetrack. In 2022, a group called Citizens for Conservation bought the farm. They plan to bring back the natural shape of Spring Creek, along with its wetlands and prairies. Another famous estate is Bank Note Farm. The village's connection to horses is even seen in school team names like Broncos and Colts.

History of Barrington Hills

Early Churches and Settlements

BCenterChurch
Barrington Center Church

The Barrington Center Church was built in 1853. It was created by the Barrington Methodist Episcopal Society. A special plaque outside the church remembers 91 local people who served in the Civil War. Since the 1980s, a Korean-American church, the New Friends Wesleyan Church, has used the building.

Around 1860, about 18 families from Czech backgrounds moved to the area. They settled near the Fox River, close to what is now Fox River Grove. In 1867, they bought land and started building St. John Nepomucene Chapel. This chapel was named after the patron saint of Bohemia. It was finished in 1873. The chapel never had its own priest, and services are held only once a year now. The St. John Nepomucene Catholic Cemetery Association owns the chapel and its cemetery. This makes it the only privately owned Catholic chapel and cemetery in the Rockford Diocese.

Farms and Estates

Around 1900, business leaders from Chicago started buying farms in the area. Many of these leaders worked in the railroad industry. They divided the large farms into big summer estates. One of these people was Spencer C. Otis Sr. By 1910, he had bought 1,000 acres (400 ha) of farmland. He called his property Hawthorne Farm.

Otis Sr. was a "gentleman farmer". This meant he worked in Chicago but enjoyed farming as a hobby on his large country estate. His son, Spencer Otis Jr., who studied agriculture, helped manage the farm. The University of Illinois was experimenting with building round barns at this time. Three of these unique round barns were built on Hawthorne Farm. Other business friends of Otis Sr. also built large estates and ran them as year-round dairy farms.

Barrington Hills Country Club

In 1921, the Barrington Hills Country Club was created. It has an eighteen-hole golf course. The land for the club was given by three of its founders: H. Stillson Hart, George E. Van Hagen, and J.R. Cardwell. Van Hagen became the club's first president.

A famous Chicago architect named Robert Work designed the first clubhouse. It opened in 1926 but burned down in 1930. Work then designed the second clubhouse, which opened in 1931 and is still standing today.

Education in Barrington Hills

The only public school located directly in Barrington Hills is Countryside Elementary School. It serves about 500 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. This school is part of the Barrington Community Unit School District 220.

Countryside Elementary students come from Barrington Hills and the eastern part of Fox River Grove. After elementary school, students go to either Barrington Prairie Middle School or Barrington Station Middle School. Older students attend the nearby Barrington High School. Some parts of the village are also in other school districts, including those for Dundee-Crown High School and Cary-Grove High School.

Geography of Barrington Hills

Barrington Hills is located at 42°08′24″N 88°12′12″W / 42.14000°N 88.20333°W / 42.14000; -88.20333.

The village covers a total area of about 27.62 square miles (71.54 km2). Most of this area, about 27.01 square miles (69.95 km2), is land. The rest, about 0.62 square miles (1.61 km2), is water. The village is part of the Fox River watershed. This means its streams and rivers flow into the Fox River, which then flows into the larger Illinois River.

Barrington Hills has about 1,700 feet (520 m) of shoreline along the east side of the Fox River. There are two main streams in the area: Spring Creek to the west and Flint Creek to the east. Over the years, dams have been built on Flint Creek. This has created several large lakes in the Cook County part of the village, such as Hawley, Hawthorne, and Keene.

Even into the 1990s, farmers still worked on about 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) of land. Homes with properties larger than 1 acre (0.40 ha) covered 30 percent of the village. Barrington Hills does not have a traditional downtown center. However, it does have a small shopping area along Route 14. In 2010, the population was 4,209. The village has kept its rural feel, even as industrial and commercial buildings have grown up around its edges.

The village shares borders with several other towns. To the west are East Dundee, Carpentersville, and Algonquin. To the north are Fox River Grove and Lake Barrington. To the east are Barrington and Inverness. To the south and southeast are South Barrington and Hoffman Estates. Barrington Hills is one of only three places in Illinois that has land in four different counties.
