History of Bay Minette
In the early days of Baldwin County, the first county seat was a town called McIntosh Bluff. This town is now in Mobile County. Later, the county seat moved to Blakeley in 1810.
Then, in 1868, it moved again to the city of Daphne. But in 1900, the state government decided to move the county seat to Bay Minette. The people of Daphne did not want this to happen.
So, in the middle of the night on October 11-12, 1901, citizens from Bay Minette secretly moved the county records from Daphne. They brought all the important documents to Bay Minette. This is why Bay Minette is still the county seat today. A special painting was made for the post office in 1937 to remember this event.
