Bohdan Viktorovych Bondarenko (born August 30, 1989) is a famous Ukrainian high jumper. He is known for winning many big competitions. He was the World Champion in 2013 and the European Champion in 2014. He also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Bohdan uses a special jumping style called the Fosbury Flop. He jumps off his right leg. He is very tall for a high jumper, standing 1.98 meters (about 6 feet 6 inches). In 2014, he made his best outdoor jump ever, clearing 2.42 meters (about 7 feet 11 inches). This jump is a European record! It also puts him among the top high jumpers of all time. His best indoor jump is 2.27 meters.

Coaching and Support

Bohdan Bondarenko's coach is his father, Viktor Bondarenko. Their teamwork is very strong. When Bohdan won the European Athlete of the Year award in 2013, his father also received a special award for coaches. Bohdan has said that his father has always understood him, which is very helpful for his training.

Early Career and Junior Success

Bohdan started showing his talent early. In 2005, he jumped 2.15 meters. By 2006, he improved to 2.21 meters indoors. He competed in the 2006 World Junior Championships in Athletics in Beijing when he was only 16. He won a bronze medal there with a jump of 2.26 meters.

In 2008, Bohdan competed in his second World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He was the best junior jumper that year. He cleared 2.26 meters on his first try, which was enough to win the gold medal! He beat other strong competitors to become the World Junior Champion.

Olympic Games and Big Wins

In 2009, Bohdan set a new personal best indoors, jumping 2.27 meters. He then competed in the 2009 European Indoor Championships in Athletics.

Bohdan set another personal best in 2012, jumping 2.31 meters in Ukraine. He made it to the finals of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He jumped 2.29 meters and finished in 7th place. It was a very close competition!

Amazing 2013 Season

The year 2013 was a huge year for Bohdan. He started by jumping 2.33 meters in his first two Diamond League competitions. He won 8 out of his first 9 events that season. Even with some pain from an old injury, he kept winning.

In June 2013, he jumped 2.36 meters at a competition in England. Just a week later, in July, he cleared an incredible 2.41 meters in Switzerland! This was the highest jump in the world since 1994. It also broke the Ukrainian national record. He even tried to break the world record of 2.45 meters, but didn't quite make it.

At the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia, Bohdan was amazing. He was the only one to clear 2.41 meters, which matched his personal best. This jump helped him win the gold medal and become the World Champion! He tried for the world record again, but it wasn't his day for that.

Because of his fantastic year, Bohdan was named the European Athlete of the Year for 2013.

Record-Breaking 2014

The year 2014 was also very successful for Bohdan. Other top jumpers were also reaching high marks.

  • May 11, Tokyo: Bohdan won a Diamond League event in Tokyo by jumping 2.40 meters.
  • June 8, Marrakesh: He won another competition in Morocco, clearing 2.39 meters. This was the highest jump ever made in Africa!
  • June 14, New York City: This was a truly special day. Bohdan and another top jumper, Mutaz Essa Barshim, both cleared 2.42 meters! This jump tied the European record and made them the second-best outdoor high jumpers in history. Bohdan won the competition because he had fewer misses. He also tried to break the world record of 2.45 meters.

In August 2014, Bohdan won the gold medal at the 2014 European Athletics Championships in Switzerland.

Recent Competitions

At the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing, Bohdan won a silver medal. He tied with another jumper, Zhang Guowei. In 2016, he won a bronze medal at the Athletics at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. He continues to compete in major events.
