Bohdan Bondarenko (born August 30, 1989) is a famous Ukrainian high jumper. He is known for winning many big competitions. These include the World Championships in 2013 and the European Championships in 2014. He also won a bronze medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Bohdan uses a special jumping style called the Fosbury Flop. He jumps off his right leg. He is one of the tallest high jumpers, standing at 1.98 meters (about 6 feet 6 inches). On June 14, 2014, he made his best jump ever, clearing 2.42 meters. This jump is a European record. It also makes him one of the top high jumpers of all time. Only Javier Sotomayor and Mutaz Essa Barshim have jumped higher outdoors. His best indoor jump is 2.27 meters.

Coaching and Family Support

Bohdan Bondarenko's father, Viktor Bondarenko, is also his coach. Bohdan shared that he and his father always understand each other. He said that having his father as a coach has been very helpful for him. In 2013, when Bohdan won the European Athlete of the Year award, his father also received a special award for coaches.

Starting Out: Junior Competitions

Bohdan started jumping high at a young age. In 2005, he jumped 2.15 meters. The next year, in 2006, he improved to 2.21 meters indoors. In August 2006, he competed in the World Junior Championships in Beijing. Even though he was only 16, he won a bronze medal with a jump of 2.26 meters.

In 2007, he improved his indoor best to 2.25 meters.

Becoming a World Junior Champion

In 2008, Bohdan competed in his second World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He was the top junior jumper that season with a jump of 2.25 meters. In the final, he cleared every height easily. He won the gold medal with a jump of 2.26 meters. This made him the World Junior Champion.

In 2009, he set a new personal best indoors, jumping 2.27 meters. He reached the final at the European Indoor Championships.

2012 London Olympics Performance

Bohdan set a new personal best of 2.31 meters in June 2012 in Ukraine. He made it to the final at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He cleared 2.29 meters and finished in 7th place. He was very close to winning a medal.

Amazing 2013 Outdoor Season

Bohdan had an incredible year in 2013. He started by jumping 2.33 meters in his first two Diamond League events. He won 8 out of his first 9 competitions. He even won despite having pain in his knee and feet.

In June 2013, he jumped 2.36 meters at a competition in England. This was a new personal best for him.

Breaking Records in Lausanne

Less than a week later, in July 2013, Bohdan jumped an amazing 2.41 meters in Switzerland. This was the highest jump in the world since 1994! He also broke the Ukrainian national record of 2.40 meters, which was set in 1985. He tried to break the world record of 2.45 meters by attempting 2.46 meters, but he didn't quite make it.

Later in July, he won another Diamond League event in London. He jumped 2.38 meters. He even tried to set a new world record of 2.47 meters, but it was not successful.

Winning the 2013 World Championship

In August 2013, Bohdan competed at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia. He was the only jumper to clear 2.41 meters. This jump matched his personal best and was a new Championship record. He won the gold medal! After winning, he tried to break the world record again, but couldn't.

Because of his amazing year, Bohdan was named the European Athlete of the Year for 2013.

2014: More High Jumps and Records

In 2014, other top jumpers like Ivan Ukhov and Mutaz Essa Barshim also cleared 2.41 meters. This showed how competitive the high jump was becoming.

  • May 11, Tokyo: Bohdan won a Diamond League meeting in Tokyo with a jump of 2.40 meters.
  • June 8, Marrakesh: He won another competition in Morocco, jumping 2.39 meters. This was the highest jump ever recorded in Africa. He then tried for a new world record of 2.46 meters.
  • June 14, New York City: In New York, Bohdan and Mutaz Essa Barshim both jumped an incredible 2.42 meters. This tied the second-highest jump ever outdoors. Bohdan won the competition because he had fewer misses. This 2.42-meter jump also became the European record.

In August, Bohdan won the gold medal at the European Championships in Zürich, Switzerland.

From 2015 to Today

At the World Championships in Beijing in 2015, Bohdan won a silver medal. He tied with China's Zhang Guowei. The gold medal went to Derek Drouin from Canada.

In 2016, Bohdan won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
