Brae Fell is a lovely hill, also known as a fell, located in the beautiful Lake District in England. It stands about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) north of Keswick. This fell reaches a height of 586 metres (1,923 feet).

Brae Fell is considered part of the Caldbeck Fells. Other fells in this group include High Pike and Carrock Fell. The name "Brae Fell" comes from the Scots language. It means a hillside or a slope. From its northern side, you can see across the Eden Valley to the Scottish Borders and the Solway Firth.

What is Brae Fell Like?

Brae Fell is a large hill covered mostly in grass. It's actually like an outer part of a bigger fell called Great Sca Fell. It sits on Great Sca Fell's northern ridge. A dip in the land, called a col, separates them. This col is about 570 metres high.

Because it's not super tall and doesn't stand out much from nearby hills, Brae Fell isn't considered a major peak. A famous fell walker named Alfred Wainwright wrote about it. He once said that if all hills were like Brae Fell, fewer people would enjoy walking them! However, it looks much more impressive from the flat lands to its north.

Long ago, in the 1800s, people mined Lead on Brae Fell. The mine was on its eastern slopes, near a stream called Roughton Gill. You can still see large piles of leftover rocks from the mine today.

How to Climb Brae Fell

Many people climb Brae Fell as part of a longer walk. They often visit other fells in the area on the same trip.

If you want to climb Brae Fell directly, you can start from the small road that runs along its northern side. There isn't a fence, so you can begin your climb anywhere along this road. You might find a faint path through the grass that leads you all the way to the top.

The Summit of Brae Fell

The very top of Brae Fell has a few scattered rocks. There's also a good-sized cairn there. A cairn is a pile of stones that acts as a landmark. You can see this cairn from several kilometres away!

The view from the summit is one of the best in the Northern Fells. When you look north, you can see a wide panorama. This includes the sparkling Solway Firth, the distant hills of the Scottish Borders, and the northern Pennines.
