Brendan Peter Schaub (born March 18, 1983) is an American podcast host, a former professional mixed martial artist, and a stand-up comedian. He hosts The Fighter and the Kid and Below the Belt with Brendan Schaub podcasts. He also co-hosts the Golden Hour podcast with fellow comedians Chris D'Elia and Erik Griffin.
Schaub joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2009. He competed on The Ultimate Fighter and fought for the UFC until 2014. He officially stopped fighting in mixed martial arts (MMA) in 2015. Since 2015, Schaub has been performing stand-up comedy. He started as a duo with comedian Bryan Callen, but now performs solo. He released his first comedy special, You'd Be Surprised, in 2019. His second special, The Gringo Papi, came out in 2022.

Early Life and School
Brendan Schaub was born and grew up in Aurora, Colorado. His mother, Debra, is English, and his father, Peter Schaub, is American. His family background includes German, Italian, and English roots. His father is a high-ranking black belt in taekwondo.
While attending Overland High School, Schaub played lacrosse for two years and American football for one year. He didn't get college sports scholarships. However, he tried out for both the football and lacrosse teams at Whittier College and was accepted. Before his third year, he moved to the University of Colorado to focus on football. He spent his first season as a "redshirt," meaning he practiced but didn't play in games.
After college, Schaub was not chosen in the 2006 NFL draft. He later signed with the Utah Blaze, a team in the Arena Football League. He was released in November 2006 and again in February 2007. Schaub then retired from football in 2007.
Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting Out in MMA
After leaving football, Schaub went back to Colorado. He started training in boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After only six months of boxing training, Schaub competed as an amateur. He won the Colorado novice-division Golden Gloves heavyweight title.
He then trained at High Altitude Martial Arts in Aurora and the Grudge Training Center in Arvada. There, he met UFC heavyweight fighter Shane Carwin. They became friends and training partners. Schaub then began his professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He mostly fought in Colorado. Schaub started with four wins and no losses. He also won the heavyweight title for the Ring of Fire organization.
Fighting in the UFC
The Ultimate Fighter Show
In 2009, Schaub joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was chosen to compete on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter, a reality TV show. Schaub was the second pick for coach Rashad.
In his first fight on the show, he beat Demico Rogers in the first round. He won by using a submission move called an anaconda choke. This win moved him to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, Schaub won by KO (punch) in the second round against Jon Madsen. In the semi-finals, Schaub defeated Marcus Jones by KO (punches) in the first round.
Schaub's first official UFC fight was against Roy Nelson at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale. Schaub lost this fight by KO (punch) in the first round.
UFC Heavyweight Fights
In his second UFC fight, Schaub quickly won in 47 seconds. He defeated Chase Gormley by TKO (punches) at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones. Schaub then fought Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 116. Schaub won this fight by TKO (punches) in the first round.
Next, Schaub faced Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 121. Schaub won by a unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he won. Schaub was set to fight Frank Mir at UFC 128 in March 2011. However, he instead fought Mirko Cro Cop at the event. Schaub won this fight by KO (punch) in the third round. He also received a "Knockout of the Night" bonus for his performance.
On August 27, 2011, at UFC 134, Schaub lost to Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira by KO (punches) in the first round. He then lost his second straight fight to Ben Rothwell by KO (punches) at UFC 145 on April 21, 2012.
Schaub was supposed to fight Lavar Johnson in December 2012. However, Johnson got injured, and Schaub was also removed from the event. They eventually fought on February 23, 2013, at UFC 157. Schaub won by unanimous decision.
Schaub was scheduled to fight Matt Mitrione in July 2013. Mitrione pulled out due to an injury, and Schaub was also removed from the event. The fight finally happened on September 21, 2013, at UFC 165. Schaub defeated Mitrione in the first round using a D'Arce choke submission.
Schaub fought former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at UFC 174 on June 14, 2014. Arlovski won by a split decision, meaning the judges did not all agree. On December 6, 2014, at UFC 181, Schaub lost to Travis Browne by TKO (punches) in the first round.
After this fight, his friend and UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggested Schaub consider a career in comedy. On October 10, 2015, Schaub announced his retirement from MMA on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Even after retiring from MMA, Schaub continued to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In May 2021, he earned the rank of black belt in the sport.

Entertainment Career
Podcasting
In 2013, Schaub and Bryan Callen started their podcast called The Fighter and the Kid. The show was first produced by FOX network. In 2016, they left FOX and began producing the podcast themselves. Schaub and Callen also started touring, performing live shows that combined their podcast with duo stand-up comedy.
In December 2016, Schaub launched his own podcast, Big Brown Breakdown. This podcast focuses on combat sports, especially mixed martial arts. In February 2018, Schaub teamed up with Showtime. His solo podcast was renamed "BELOW THE BELT with Brendan Schaub". They also launched a web show with the same name, hosted by Schaub.
On December 21, 2018, Schaub and Theo Von announced a new podcast called "King and the Sting". On January 13, 2022, Chris D'Elia joined the podcast, and it was renamed "King and the Sting and Wing". On November 4, 2022, "King and the Sting and Wing" was officially renamed "The Golden Hour", with Erik Griffin replacing Theo Von.
In September 2023, Schaub and Callen publicly stated that Kast Media owed their company a large sum of money. Other creators also made similar claims against Kast Media.
Stand-up Comedy
After retiring from mixed martial arts in 2014, Schaub began a career in stand-up comedy. He first toured and performed with Bryan Callen. On August 10, 2016, he started performing solo at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, California.
In January 2019, Brendan Schaub filmed his first Showtime comedy special, You'd Be Surprised. It was released on May 18, 2019. Schaub released his second comedy special, The Gringo Papi, on YouTube on April 28, 2022. Both You'd Be Surprised and The Gringo Papi received low ratings from online users.
Television and Film Appearances
In 2016, Schaub and Callen released a sketch comedy series on iTunes called The Fighter and the Kid 3D. Schaub made his first movie appearance in the 2016 film Range 15. In 2015, Schaub appeared on the television series MythBusters. He helped test a myth related to video games.
In 2017, Showtime hired Schaub to provide commentary and analysis. This was for the Mayweather/McGregor boxing match. He worked alongside Mauro Ranallo, Paulie Malignaggi, and Brian Custer.
In 2018, Schaub began working for E! Entertainment news. He co-hosted the after-shows for major awards events. These included the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, People's Choice Awards, and Grammy Awards. Also in 2018, Schaub became a panelist for the TV show Bravo's Play-By-Play on Bravo network. Schaub made his second movie appearance in the 2020 David Ayer film The Tax Collector.

During his fighting career, Schaub had various sponsors. These included KeepItPlayful.com, the Reign Training Center, Box N Burn Gym, Soul Electronics, and Alchemist Management. In 2023, Schaub launched his own whisky brand called Tiger Thiccc Whiskey.

Personal Life
Brendan Schaub is engaged to Joanna Zanella. They have two sons, born in 2016 and 2019. He has one brother named Jay. Schaub supports sports teams from Denver, Colorado, and Los Angeles, California, as well as the Cleveland Browns. He is also very interested in fashion and cars. In May 2021, Schaub earned his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu after 14 years of training.
