Brendan Peter Schaub, born on March 18, 1983, is an American who has done many things! He's a podcast host, a former professional mixed martial artist (MMA fighter), and a stand-up comedian.

He is known for hosting The Fighter and the Kid podcast and Below the Belt with Brendan Schaub. He also co-hosts the Golden Hour podcast. Brendan joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2009 through a TV show called The Ultimate Fighter. He fought in the UFC until 2014 and officially stopped fighting in 2015.

Since 2015, Brendan has been a stand-up comedian. He first performed with Bryan Callen, but now he performs by himself. He has released two comedy specials: You'd Be Surprised (2019) and The Gringo Papi (2022).

Early Life and Education

Brendan Schaub was born and grew up in Aurora, Colorado. His mother, Debra, is English, and his father, Peter, is American. His family background includes German, Italian, and English roots. His father is also skilled in martial arts, holding a second-degree black belt in taekwondo.

While attending Overland High School, Brendan played varsity lacrosse for two years and American football for one year. He didn't get sports scholarships for college. But he tried out for both football and lacrosse at Whittier College and got accepted to play both. Before his third year, he moved to the University of Colorado to focus only on football. He took a year off from playing to practice and get better during his first season there.

After college, Brendan was not chosen in the 2006 NFL draft. However, he signed with the Utah Blaze, an Arena Football League team. He was released from the team in November 2006 and again in February 2007. Brendan then retired from playing football in 2007.

Mixed Martial Arts Career

Starting His MMA Journey

After leaving football, Brendan Schaub went back to Colorado. He began training in boxing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. After only six months of boxing training, he competed as an amateur. He won the Colorado novice-division Golden Gloves heavyweight title.

Brendan then started training at High Altitude Martial Arts in Aurora and the Grudge Training Center in Arvada. There, he met Shane Carwin, a UFC heavyweight fighter. They became friends and training partners. Brendan then started his professional career in mixed martial arts (MMA). He mostly fought in Colorado. He won his first four fights and became the heavyweight champion for the Ring of Fire organization.

Fighting in the UFC

The Ultimate Fighter TV Show

In 2009, Brendan Schaub joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He was chosen to compete on the tenth season of The Ultimate Fighter, a reality TV show. Brendan was the second pick for coach Rashad.

In his first fight on the show, he beat Demico Rogers by submission in the first round. He used an anaconda choke to move to the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, Brendan won his fight by KO (knockout) with a punch in the second round against Jon Madsen. In the semi-finals, he defeated Marcus Jones by knockout with punches in the first round.

Brendan's first official UFC fight was against Roy Nelson at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale. Brendan lost this fight by knockout with a punch in the first round.

UFC Heavyweight Division Fights

In his second UFC fight, Brendan quickly won against Chase Gormley. He got a TKO (technical knockout) with punches in just 47 seconds at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones. Next, Brendan fought Chris Tuchscherer at UFC 116. He won this fight by TKO with punches in the first round.

Brendan then faced Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 121. He won this fight by a unanimous decision, meaning all judges agreed he won. Brendan and Frank Mir were supposed to fight at UFC 128. But Brendan ended up fighting Mirko Cro Cop instead at that event. Brendan won by knockout with a punch in the third round and earned the Knockout of the Night bonus award.

On August 27, 2011, at UFC 134, Brendan lost to Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira by knockout with punches in the first round. He then lost his second straight fight to Ben Rothwell by knockout with punches at UFC 145 on April 21, 2012.

Brendan was set to fight Lavar Johnson at UFC on Fox 5 in December 2012. However, Johnson got injured, and Brendan was removed from the event. They eventually fought on February 23, 2013, at UFC 157. Brendan won by unanimous decision. After the fight, it was announced that Johnson had tested positive for high testosterone levels.

Brendan was scheduled to fight Matt Mitrione at UFC on Fox 8 in July 2013. Mitrione pulled out due to an injury, and Brendan was also removed from the event. The fight finally happened on September 21, 2013, at UFC 165. Brendan won in the first round using a D'Arce choke submission.

Brendan fought former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at UFC 174 on June 14, 2014. Arlovski won by a split decision, meaning the judges were not in full agreement. On December 6, 2014, at UFC 181, Brendan lost to Travis Browne by TKO with punches in the first round.

After this fight, Brendan's friend and UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggested he retire from MMA and try a career in comedy. On October 10, 2015, Brendan announced his retirement from MMA on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast. Even after retiring from MMA, Brendan kept training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. On May 29, 2021, he earned the rank of black belt in the sport.

Entertainment Career

Podcasting

In 2013, Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen started their podcast called The Fighter and the Kid. The show was first produced by FOX network. In 2016, they left FOX and started producing the podcast themselves. Brendan and Bryan also began touring. They performed live shows that mixed a podcast with a duo stand-up comedy act.

In December 2016, Brendan launched his own podcast, Big Brown Breakdown. This podcast focuses on combat sports, especially mixed martial arts.

In February 2018, Brendan teamed up with Showtime. His solo podcast was renamed "BELOW THE BELT with Brendan Schaub". They also launched a web show with the same name, where Brendan was the host.

On December 21, 2018, Brendan and Theo Von announced a new podcast called "King and the Sting". On January 13, 2022, Chris D'Elia joined the podcast, and it was renamed "King and the Sting and Wing". On November 4, 2022, the podcast was officially renamed "The Golden Hour", with Erik Griffin replacing Theo Von.

In September 2023, Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen publicly stated that a company called Kast Media owed their production company a large sum of money. Other creators also made similar claims.

After retiring from mixed martial arts in 2014, Brendan Schaub started a career in stand-up comedy. At first, he toured and performed with Bryan Callen. On August 10, 2016, he performed as a solo comedian for the first time at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles, California.

In January 2019, Brendan filmed his first Showtime comedy special, You'd Be Surprised. It was released on May 18, 2019. Brendan released his second comedy special, The Gringo Papi, on YouTube on April 28, 2022.

Television and Film Appearances

In 2016, Brendan Schaub and Bryan Callen released a short comedy series on iTunes called The Fighter and the Kid 3D. Brendan made his first movie appearance in the 2016 film Range 15. In 2015, Brendan appeared on the TV series MythBusters. He helped test a myth related to video games.

In 2017, Showtime hired Brendan for commentary and analysis. This was for the boxing match between Mayweather and McGregor. He worked alongside other sports commentators.

In 2018, Brendan started working for E! Entertainment news. He co-hosted the after-shows for major awards like the Golden Globes, Academy Awards, and Grammy Awards. Also in 2018, Brendan became a panelist for the TV show Bravo's Play-By-Play on the Bravo network. Brendan made his second movie appearance in the 2020 David Ayer film The Tax Collector.

Other Ventures

In 2023, Brendan Schaub launched his own whisky brand called Tiger Thiccc Whiskey. The name is said to represent the strength and ability to overcome challenges, like a tiger.

Personal Life

Brendan Schaub is engaged to Joanna Zanella. They have two sons, born in 2016 and 2019. He also has a brother named Jay. Brendan supports sports teams from Denver, Colorado, and Los Angeles, California. He is also a fan of the Cleveland Browns. Brendan enjoys fashion and cars. In May 2021, after 14 years of training, Brendan was promoted to black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
