Brunswick is a city located in Chariton County, Missouri, in the United States. In 2020, about 801 people lived there. Brunswick is officially known as the Pecan Capital of Missouri. The Missouri Farmers Association (MFA Incorporated), a group that helps farmers, started in Brunswick in 1914.

History of Brunswick

For thousands of years, different groups of indigenous peoples (native tribes) lived near the Missouri River. When Europeans first arrived, tribes like the Missouri, Osage, and Kaw lived in the area. In 1723, a French explorer named Etienne de Veniard built Fort Orleans nearby. It was the first European fort in what is now Missouri. It was a trading post for the French territory called La Louisiane.

After the Louisiana Purchase, when the United States bought a huge area of land from France, many new settlers came to Missouri. They came from states like Kentucky and Tennessee. These settlers brought African-American slaves with them. They grew crops like hemp and tobacco. This area along the Missouri River became known as Little Dixie.

The town of Brunswick was first planned in 1836 by James Keyte. He was an English immigrant and a Methodist minister. He also founded Keytesville, Missouri. Brunswick was named after a place in England. The original town site is now underwater because the Missouri and Grand rivers changed course. Mr. Keyte opened the first store and a sawmill in Brunswick.

At first, the town grew slowly. By 1840, about 125 people lived there. But in the early 1840s, many new people moved in. More businesses opened, like a hotel, a wagon maker, a brick factory, and a pork packing facility. Before the American Civil War, Brunswick was an important trading center. This was because steamboats could reach it, and nearby counties did not have railroads. In 1849, 534 steamboats arrived or left Brunswick. The first school opened in Brunswick in June 1840. It was a one-room log schoolhouse with about 35 students. The town's first newspaper, The Brunswicker, started in 1847 and is still published today.

After the Civil War, farmers started growing different crops. This was because they no longer had slaves to do the hard work. However, in 1880, Chariton County still grew the most tobacco in Missouri. The railroad finally reached Brunswick in 1867. This made it easier to transport goods and people, reducing the need for steamboats.

In 1910, Dr. W.W. Bowen started the Brunswick Institute of Pharmacy. This school trained over 5,000 pharmacists before it closed in 1937. In 1914, farmers in Brunswick formed the Missouri Farmers Association (MFA). This group helps farmers work together. It later moved to Columbia, Missouri. Brunswick also saw more factories open in the mid-1900s. These included an alfalfa-drying plant, an electric company, a fertilizer plant, and a glove factory. The U.S. Coast Guard even had a small base near Brunswick from 1965 to 1973.

After World War II, Brunswick became known for its pecan groves. In 1972, the state of Missouri officially named Brunswick the Pecan Capital of Missouri. The Brunswick Pecan Festival started in 1980 to celebrate the many pecans grown there. It is now an annual event held every October. You can see the world's largest 20th-century pecan in downtown Brunswick. It's a concrete replica that is seven feet tall and twelve feet wide, weighing 12,000 pounds! It was built in 1982 to honor a special pecan discovered in 1947.

Education in Brunswick

Schools in the Brunswick area began in 1840. The first was a small, one-room private school. After the Civil War, public education became more important. The first public school in Brunswick opened around 1868. A large brick school was built in 1871. It was used until a new school was built in 1930–31. The building for the current junior high and high school was built in 1956–57. The newest addition is a grade school built in 1991–1992.

In 1949, Missouri changed its public education system. Many small rural schools joined together to form larger districts. This is how the Brunswick R-II school district was created. It is the second-largest school district in Chariton County. From 2006 to 2010, about 250 students attended the schools. The school colors are red and black, and their mascot is the Wildcat. Brunswick R-II schools participate in sports and other activities as a Class 1A school.

The town also has a public library called the Brunswick Area Public Library.
